It was in late autumn of 2016 when I first visited Korea. It was during that trip when I also first tried kalguksu, a knife-cut wheat type of noodle dish, in Namdaemun. I've been trying out different ones from different places since then. I was glad that I found an instant pack from a Korean store near my place. It wasn't as delicious as the freshly made ones in Korea but they are a good alternative for when you cannot travel.
Tteokbokki A popular Street Food for the bravest one's 😋
Tteokbokki is a very spicy stir-fry that you can get in almost any place in Korea. This dish is mainly made by rice cakes (the macaron shape) and fish cakes. A long time ago it was a dish for the royals, and nowadays it is one of the cheapest street food dishes in Korea.
🤔What ingredients is it made of? What is the appearance of this food?
1️⃣Basically this is a dish made of 'Rice'. Yes, these are rice cakes, swimming in Gochujang sauce!
2️⃣It looks like macarons for Westerns. with a bunch of red tomato sauce.
🙋🏻I remembered ordering this at the university when I just arrived in Korea, thinking that they were some kind of pasta with a delicious tomato sauce. As you might guess I couldn't finish it due to the overspiceness. I would recommend to order this food as 'banchan' (Share dish) not as main dish. Either you are a spicy-lover or it wouldn't be possible to finish it!
💸How much does this food cost?
You can get a Tteokbokki for (1.500w - 2.000w) in a street food vendor or you can order it in a restaurant where the price would be a bit higher (4.000 -5.000), but still really low compared to spanish tapas.
🔥Is this really spicy?
Yes it is, we are in Korea! This is like fire in your mouth! When friends who don't like spicy food ask me if they can try it I always recommend not to, it's not possible to regulate the spiciness of this dish. I always have seen this dish covered with sauce so there is no possibility to regalute the level of spiciness.
🌶Why does it have this 'red intense color' in this dish?
As we have mentioned, this dish is really spicy! and the red colour of this dish is due to the 'Gochujang: a spicy chilli sauce' the famous Korean sauce.
잡채 Japchae aka Korean stir-fried glass (sweet potato) noodles
Growing up, I never liked japchae. I was never really a fan of glass noodles, didn't like how there were bunch of veggies in it and thought my mom was tricking me to make me eat vegetables 😅 Then I had really good japchae in a restaurant in Austin (can't remember where 😢) with rice and it was heavenly 🤤 Japchae is something I crave for once in a while!
I've been scrolling through instagram a lot and have been looking at what kind of Korean food people like to eat around the world. I was (still am) very surprised, so many people love japchae!😲
Japchae, anyone? 😊
(I don't know the recipe I'm sorry!!!!!!)
