Several new Canadians who first arrived as Syrian refugees in recent years have a message for you: vote.
One of them, Mohammed Alsaleh, worked at a polling station as a child in Syria preparing election cards.
"It asked a question: 'Do you want Mr. Assad to be the president?' My job was to mark yes, so when Syrians come to vote … it's already marked yes," said Alsaleh. "That's Syrian democracy."
When it comes to the Canadian ballot, Alsaleh said there's a stark difference.
"For the first time, I see a ballot with different choices, and I get to vote secretly and then cast my own vote into the ballot — it's amazing."
He said he finds it hard to comprehend that many Canadians don't cast votes.
"People are dying to have a say in my country, Syria," Alsaleh said. "And here you can do it without being policed, without being harassed. You shouldn't take it for granted. You should go out there. You should vote. Do your duty as a citizen."

A couple of Manitoba families were celebrating Thanksgiving on Saturday evening in the small resort community of Victoria Beach when they found this unexpected visitor feasting on their supply of desserts.
The Thanksgiving diners — about 20 people in total — were all enjoying their meal in one cabin while the desserts were being stored in the neighbouring cabin, where there was room and they could cool off.
When it was time for dessert, two of the diners, Lori Paige and her mom, went to get the treats, only to come face-to-face with this 400- to 500-pound black bear.
"As we walked up the deck … my mother grabbed the handle of the door and she was just about to open it when she said 'Oh my God, there's a bear,'" Paige says.
As they later learned, the bear had ripped through a screen then pushed aside a barbecue to get into the veranda where the treats were being stored.
Rather than turn on them, the bear continued to devour as many of the treats as it could before it was time to dash.
"It was standing on his hind legs and he had eaten everything except for the pumpkin pies," Paige says.
"It definitely put a different twist on our Thanksgiving this year," she says, adding that the family has now learned its lesson and will not be leaving anything in that veranda unattended in the future.

At least 20 ancient coffins were uncovered in the Southern city of Luxor, about 500 km south of Cairo.
The ministry said the coffins were found in the Asasif Necropolis, which has tombs dating from 1,994 B.C. to 332 B.C.
