Good morning! Sometimes when you are in a park in Minneapolis, you kind of have to pinch yourself as a reminder that you are in the middle of a large metropolitan area. Photo taken from the middle of a frozen Lake of the Isles by @adam_goodkind
CROSSING A THRESHOLD • • • It has been far too long since I walked to the river. It was one of my favorite things to do, upon moving here. Sure, I once lived about 2½ miles from the (highly polluted yet still picturesque) Ohio River. But to be able to walk to the Mississippi from home within 15 minutes is something I need to cherish. #lakestreetmarshallbridge#srichinmoypeacebridge#minneapolisstpaul
More ice, because how can I not?
In particular, I’m loving the luminous gossamer shapes that happen where other humans have tried to break through—the way a sudden blow is inscribed and recorded by water.
Lake ice is dreadfully sparse this winter—my favorite views have been blocked by snow and occluded by slush and it’s hard to tell just looking down if you’re walking on water or on an uncleared sidewalk a block over.
Today, though, there was a tiny tiny offering of fresh cracking ice out there (thanks to the humans and our environment-modifying shenanigans). Dusk was beautiful, rosy, but its glow was an afterthought next to the depths and fissures of this ice, even after weeks of cloudy skies.
I trust our sunsets to hang onto glory longer than I trust our lakes to keep freezing solid in winter. But so long as they do, I’ll be out here searching them for beauty, and everywhere else doing whatever I can think of to reduce our energy use, to shift our culture, to act on climate, to invite this world to envelope us in its sharp beauty each year.
@loppetfoundation’s City of Lakes Loppet kicks off today through Feb 2 with cross-country skiing, the iconic Luminary Loppet, skijoring, fat bike tours, the @surlybrewing Beer Garden and more. View the schedule of events at thegreatnorthernfestival.com. #TheGreatNorthern
A STEP AHEAD • • • The 24th Street Pedestrian Bridge is coming along. And I’m eager to see what’s next, as it progresses toward its completion in Autumn 2021. This year, you may or may not find my posts more boring, if you don’t enjoy public infrastructure. But I need to exhibit what truly ignites my good energy and mental clarity. #24thstreetpedestrianbridge

Flying drones is becoming harder and harder, so we take any opportunity to do so 🤩
We had the privilege to be invited to @katstewie and @erik.the.dentist’s wedding in Jamaica, and took the little bird out for a bit on a calm morning 🦩
The wind had been tumultuous the past few days, and then finally... this 😍

Instameets are missing🤔? This past year, MNCommunity had many free, open meetups coordinated with local entities. Plus, collaborations with other friends to leverage each other's shared interests for the good of community.
There were also giveaways, reposts, and promotions of favorite local brands...it's no wonder why the community continues to grow.
Look for more announcements soon. Got an idea or want to collaborate? Feel free to comment or message.
Though Instagram's changes, thank you for following. Here's to continued friendship in 2020. #mncomm
