A really cool and unique study was done by Wang and company observing the effects sleep restriction (SR) can have on weight loss. The magnitude of the results were quite surprising.

36 overweight/obese subjects that completed the 8 week study were split into two groups. Group 1 (CR) was instructed to eat at 95% of their measured resting metabolic rate (RMR), and sleep as they desire. Group 2 (CR+SR) was instructed to eat at 95% of their measured RMR, and restrict their sleep 5 days a week, with 2 days a week as they desire. The goal of the study was to look at the differences in weight loss between the two groups.
Both groups lost a statistically equal amount of weight (3.2-3.3 kg), but the type of weight lost was vastly different. The CR group’s weight lost was 83% fat mass and 17% lean mass. The CR+SR group’s weight lost was 20% fat mass and 80% lean mass😶. Although not significant, Leptin levels decreased and Ghrelin levels increased more in the sleep restricted group possibly leading to more hunger.
What I find really cool about this study is the sleep restricted group wasn’t limited each day for all 8 weeks. The 5 days of restriction and 2 days of ad libitum more closely mimicked the average person’s sleep schedule. Go a few nights without a ton of sleep, then try and catch up. This study demonstrates the importance of sleep in trying to lose FAT, not weight. Losing weight is dictated by calorie consumption. Losing fat is dictated by eating a calorie deficit paired with quality sleep, sufficient protein, resistance training, etc. This leads to one of drawbacks I see with this study. The group likely didn’t perform any sort of resistance training, which would’ve potentially yielded better results in fat mass lost, even with a sleep restriction. Regardless, the study still demonstrates the importance of sleep when trying to lose fat.
