What's your favorite incense? I LIVE for aromatherapy & thoroughly enjoy blending my own scents.. however, I've definitely set off a few fire alarms in my day, burning my blends indoors. .
Thankfully the Japanese developed an ingenious way of burning incense without combusting the ingredients. With a ceramic bowl of white ash, a mica plate & your standard charcoal briquettes, you can control the temperatures to achieve a slow burn for HOURS ⌛🔥
I find making my own blends very relaxing & therapeutic. Here's a little insight to one of my favorite blends (resins only, no herbs), & burning it in the traditional Japanese way. I wish you could smell these pictures!

Used in a number of Cultures throughout antiquity. Dragon's Blood is a real resin.
Derived from various distinct plant genera like Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus rotang, and Pterocarpus.
This resin has been used for many things other then a burning incense like varnish, medicine (please research), and even dye.
Today, pagans and witches use this resin for spells of protection, love and banashing. Also said to add potency to your workings.
It is ok ne thing to moisturize your skin and another thing to keep that moisture in. As our skin thins it lets moisture escape. You can seal in moisture with several ingredients found in ZenJenSkin plant based skincare.

Today I have Dragon’s Blood in my oil burner. I love this stuff, it makes me feel powerful. Dragon’s blood is collected as a resin from a number of tress. It has antibacterial, antiviral and anti inflammatory properties and great healing abilities. Surprisingly, is not used in western medicine. It is, however, used in beauty products for its anti- ageing properties. Go figure.
Dragon’s Blood is used in magic for cleansing, protecting, love spells and for giving one courage when facing inner demons. Being associated with the element fire it will pack a punch, so it’s also good for banishing and expelling evil and negativity. As an incense coupled with camphor it is a great way to cleanse a house before moving in, as it will also dispel the previous tenants energies. #thecatandwolf#basicwitch#dragonsblood#sangredegrado#croton#magic

The iconic Dragon’s Blood tree. Endemic to Socotra, also known as the Socotran umbrella, these prehistoric looking trees formed from the blood of a dragon that fought with an elephant. They now bleed the dragon’s blood, which has medicinal properties.
Dragon’s Blood by Jane Yolen has an excellent map in the first book of the series. I keep calling it a trilogy, but apparently there is a forth book in the series written years later, which I haven’t read yet. I loved this book when I was younger though, a penal colony, much like Australia was, set in space, and by training dragons, you can find your way out of bondage. (Not like Australia). #dragonsblood #janekyolen #youngadult #middlegradestory #dragons
Cinnabar is a beautifully coloured, red, mercury sulphide and could arguably rank as the nastiest, deadliest mineral the planet has to offer. ⠀
The word cinnabar has several possible origins but the most appropriate (whether true or not) is that it derives from a Persian word that means 'dragons blood'.
Cinnabar is insoluble in stomach acid and water and therefore has low toxicity if ingested. But, native mercury (whose vapours are insanely toxic) is often present pooling out of the cinnabar in some samples. It is also important to realise that heating cinnabar, or even just having it in a hot room, can cause mercury vapours to be released.⠀
Mercury toxicity is horrendous: tremors; loss of vision, hearing and speech; loss of coordination; disturbed (over or under stimulation) sensations; comas and death. Dragons blood doesn’t just kill you though, first is messes you up. Mercury toxicity onsets with an excruciating itching and burning sensation in the skin to deal which is quite an achievement as your skin will be peeling off your body at the same time.
(Massive cinnabar gossan, Almàden, Spain; mineralisation ~360 Ma. This post is the sixth “deadly mineral” in the School of Rock collection)
