My final day of sparring in @officialdecaturboxing was just what I needed. Willy Pep rounds (defense only, no punching), body counters, movement drills and Mittwork courtesy of the legend, Xavier “Bad Pads” Biggs. I’m grateful to have the honor of learning from this Philly phenom and I hope to use his lessons to do my country and cause proud in the @chessboxing_official World Championship next week! ♟🥊
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) *sighs* I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed because I was. I was hoping this would be on par, if not better than WTTJ. Unfortunately it wasn’t. Was it a bad movie? Certainly not. Did I enjoy it? Definitely, just not as much as the previous film. The main point I can make about this movie, is that when it came to the “level” sequences or the action sequences, this movie is definitely more entertaining and more fun than the first. The dune buggy and the ostriches, the Harry Potter staircase bridges, and the climax of the movie, I thought those were certainly better than before. It’s just everything in between those sequences that didn’t work for me. It all felt all too similar to the previous film, as did the rest of the movie. I just wish they’d tried something new. I don’t know how much further you could go with this concept, but at least if they experimented, I’m sure it would’ve been more interesting. The story is pretty much a copy of the first film, except the jewel is orange now instead of green, and it doesn’t take place in a jungle, rather a desert and snowy mountain area. The villain, well he’s only a little better, but not really worth mentioning. World building was still done well, the movie certainly had style to it, but it did suffer a little in the writing department. There were certainly a lot of funny moments in the film, but there were more jokes this time round that didn’t land, and I only found myself genuinely laughing maybe once or twice. But I will say this, that the performances are even better this time round. Awkwafina was a great addition to this cast, and everyone played their “new” characters perfectly, especially Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. And Jack Black. And Awkwafina. And Karen Gillan. Ok, everyone had standout performances. So while The Next Level might not be as good or enjoyable as it’s predecessors, because of its likeliness to Welcome to the Jungle, it’s still an alright movie that you can still have some fun with.
