Many of you are familiar with the implementation of new bye-laws on pet owners by Bangalore's municipal corporation (BBMP). Whilst I agree with some of the rules that pet parents must clean up after their dogs, there are some bye laws that need to be rethought... 1. Restrict the number of dogs to 1 per apartment and 3 per independent house. Recommending that "extra dogs" be given away to shelters.
2. A list of 64 dog breeds approved to live in apartments has left out many of our own beautiful Indian breeds like the Pariah dog & commonly found breeds such as cocker spaniels, Golden Retrievers and beagle. Instead it has included breeds currently uncommon and foreign to India such as the coton du Tulear, Affenpinscher and the Sealyham Terrier.
So if you don’t have the listed breeds you have to get rid of your dog!
If you are a dog lover, anywhere in India then laws like these should worry you. If we allow these irrational laws to be enforced many dogs will suffer. And what are currently Bangalore state laws will soon become enforceable in your state too.
Due to public outcry the bye-laws are on hold until the BBMP council meeting on the 16th of this month. Legal recourse is being taken too.
We need you to help keep the pressure up. Request you all, regardless of if you live in Bangalore or not, help us stand by the dogs of Bangalore. These bye-laws have to be quashed and fresh ones drafted taking into account the citizens' voices.
