Welcome aboard Derya! Expedition Fellow Derya Akkaynak and her camera joined @Superflexstudio's expedition in Alotau, Papua New Guinea today.⠀
Derya's understanding of the surface is intimate, after six years of studying aerospace, she turned her attention to water, now holding mechanical engineering and oceanographer qualifications.⠀
Through the creation of a new mathematical algorithm, she has pioneered photography that removes water from underwater images. In addition to creating surrealist photographs of Ocean landscapes seemingly transported to a desert, her algorithm has allowed the scientific community to view the world underwater with much greater clarity, an extraordinary advancement for research and conservation efforts.⠀
Derya's interest in the way the world looks underwater has also led her to explore the visual perspective of marine creatures, using hyperspectral sensors to transcend the limitations of human vision.

Papua New Guinea day 2
Since PNG is such a remote place, there is a common belief among locals that if someone from the outside is arriving to offer help, then they are carrying the spirit of the ancestors who have returned to save them.
This is one of the reasons why we received a warm welcoming in every village we reached, including gifts, foods and other local products. Generosity is a big aspect of the culture since the idea of "this is mine", and having a personal property- does not exist so strongly, especially in rural areas. I found that generosity there was a state of mind, with nothing to do with the material world and that abundance, comes from within.

The highland people of Papua New Guinea are as if from a time capsule. Already an unique island nation with unsurpassed biodiversity, flora, fauna, and a spectrum of cultures and tribes, the central highlands of Papua New Guinea was only first contacted over 80 years ago by Australian authorities.
Under Australian rule, colonization of Papua New Guinea was limited to the coastal areas. There had been virtually no real attempt to explore or map out the rugged and mountainous interior. It was simply assumed that because the highland terrain was so difficult, nobody could possibly be living there.

Meet one of the hardest subjects I have ever filmed. The King of Saxony bird of paradise. They can be found in the highlands of Papua New Guinea at about 2000-2500 meters above sea level. It’s a challenging place to work to say the least. The best strategy? spend hundreds of hours in the right place, and eventually the right time may well present itself.
There was an unbelievable team involved with this project. It was incredible to be able to work alongside @tobynotown@jamesaldred1@alextivenan@mohansandhu87@nancylane11@ewschunke .
Dancing with the Birds is now on Netflix
As the current year slowly draws to a close and the next one begins very soon, I tend to get a little introspective.
Every year has its ups and downs, and as a small business owner I definitely know that. Its never a bad idea to take a pause and count my blessings.
In the fast-paced culture of business where competition and comparison are inevitable, its always a nice shift to remind myself what I'm grateful for.
This year I am grateful for the two years of being in business, MKS Boutique. I am grateful for the travels this year to source products for the shop. Sourcing products has gotten a little more easier because of the connections I have created, these connections have led to more connections. I am thankful for the unconditional support from my loved ones ❤
Grateful and blessed. Let this new year 2020 of business continue to glorify God, let it imitate God's character and creation.
Thank you to our customers and friends for the support over the past two years. We appreciate you all.

A striking clash of cultures colliding head first - PNG is being exposed to globalisation at an unprecedented rate creating scenes such as this, a Chimbu skeleton warrior smoking a cigarette. It looks like a quit campaign poster. It is sad that exposure to the outside world is often at the cost of traditional culture but who are we to blame these people. When you have little, the choice between medicine, fresh water and education vs paint and songs is an easy one. Our cultures have all done the same. For me the important thing is to retain a sense of pride and value in the old traditions and here I do think that sustainable tourism is a key component. •
