It's always an amazing experience when I get to see & interact with wildlife, especially when unexpected. I've swam with sea lions, manatees, manta rays, sting rays, baby sharks, turtles, whale sharks, etc.. and seen humpback whales up close, during my kayaking adventures in Antarctica. Despite having done these activities before, the excitement never ends. So having the chance to swim with humpback whales here in Tonga was an opportunity I could not miss.
These same humpback whales from Antarctica migrate to the waters around Tonga between June & October to mate & breed. This is the best time to see a mama humpback whale with her calf.
Since it's the end of the season, & this is the last week for whale swims, there's a lower chance of whale sightings. Nevertheless, we still signed up, though with lower expectations. You never know what will happen with wildlife, but that's what makes it exciting. You get the best experience when least expected.
Luckily, we got our chance to see a mama humpback whale with her calf before they migrated back to Antarctica. After about 45mins of boat travel, we arrived at the outer reef. The sea was rough, with strong current, waves, & wind so visibility wasn't great, but this is what you brave for the chance to swim & interact with humpback whales in the wild. The calf was playful, swimming around us, while the mom mostly stayed at the bottom watching her baby. It was fantastic to then witness them both come up to the top then dive down together, with their graceful movements.
For me, having seen these humpback whales in Antarctica then in New Zealand, and now swim with them in Tonga just completes the entire experience & is one I'll never forget!
A picture is worth a thousand words and @kailakeyphoto has plenty to say! She has such a versatile portfolio and I admire her aesthetic. I asked her to pick out five of her favorite photos to feature followed by a couple questions about her work. //
1. Why did you select these images to feature? I chose these images because while they’re so different from one another, I feel as though each image speaks for itself. In the images of the couples I feel love, warmth and genuineness- yet in the cultural images I feel strength, power, determination and courage.
2. What do you strive to capture in a photograph? When I take photos it’s not just to merely take pretty photos. I love having the ability to share a single photo that is powerful enough to share its own message without words. I strive to capture authenticity, power, and genuineness. I strive to capture the tiniest moments that take people back to a time in their lives where they can relive some of their most happiest moments.

Bora Bora is a small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Surrounded by sand-fringed motus (islets) and a turquoise lagoon protected by a coral reef, it’s known for its scuba diving. It's also a popular luxury resort destination where some guest bungalows are perched over the water on stilts. At the island's center rises Mt. Otemanu, a 727m dormant volcano. #borabora#polynesia#lagoon#volcano#southpacificislands#wanderingearth#travelgram
