😜 The things parents do for their kids.....
On our recent stay at @tweenwatersresort , Phoenix was both fascinated and afraid of some overly friendly resident lorikeets.🐦 .
The first day, on his insistence we took them some apple to eat, but whenever they came too close he’d peg the apple and jump away (may have something to do with being traumatised by dive-bombing magpies in the past)
Each day however, he got a little more confident, until he was feeding them by hand and naming them after his school buddies.😄 .
By the last day and after my demonstration that having a bird on your head is really no big deal 😆, he even asked for me to put one on his head! .
Maybe he’ll never remember this moment, and I’m sure there will be bigger hurdles in his life. But, I’ll always remember being lucky enough to be there to help him on his way - even if it meant risking bird poop on my head in the process.....
I can’t help but recite this poem every time I see one of these guys - not even sure where I learnt it 😄
“A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican! “
I’d seen photos but I was unprepared for how beautiful the Norwegian fjords would be in person. The reflection of the mountains in the water were one of my favorite things. .
Was there a place you visited that was even more beautiful in person than in photos?

Due to inflation the number of the beast is now 812. Please adjust your satanic rituals accordingly.
Schloss Hohenschwangau, The childhood residence of the mad King Ludwig ll of Bavaria.
This is the view through the window of the abbey ruins, overlooking the river, where the children and I must have walked nearly a hundred times during our stay in our French village last year. When I look at this photograph, I feel a stab of longing, envy even, of my past self, that a view like this was once my “normal.”
There’s the kind of travel you can take where you roam like a true nomad, visiting new places and soaking up new experiences with every new day. This kind of travel has its value and I have experienced the exhilaration of life on the road myself.
But slow travel… slow travel means stopping in one place long enough to feel something for it. To uncover some of its unexpected nooks and crannies, those beautiful hidden corners. To get to know the people by name: like Ann, our favourite chocolatier; and Rachel, who helped me with my French and planted public flower-gardens all over her village; and Mohommed, the baker who kept aside extra baguettes for the children every day, and always greeted my four-year-old son with a cheery “Bonjour Harry Kewell!”
Slow travel means looking through the vine-covered window of a ruined abbey and seeing not only a beautiful view, but a familiar view. A view that feels, even if only for a short while, like home.
Do you have any travel stories of a place that took root in your heart and just won’t let go? I’d love to hear them
