To będzie też nasz najdłuższy przystanek - niemal 3 miesiące.
In honour of my 25th birthday, I have spent the last week and a bit staying at a temple here in Thailand practicing Vipassana meditation. You are probably more familiar with its western term, ‘mindfulness’. A Vipassana course is traditionally taken from 3 - 21 days. generally in complete silence and observing a few of the many rules Buddhist Monks obey. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our days began at 5am, with a Dhamma (teaching) talk, followed by breakfast at 7am, morning meditation, lunch at 11am (no eating past midday as per tradition), reporting to our monk for new meditation instructions, afternoon meditation, evening changing, evening meditation and the finally sleep… on a very hard mattress as per tradition. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were also not allowed to smoke, drink alcohol, read, write, listen to music, use the internet etc. Stripped back from absolutely everything we love, as well as a disconnection from the “real world” you begin to truly understand your own personal balance point, and the aspects of your own ego that make your consciousness unique.
A few of the rules were of course, broken. Most notably in the form of a morning coffee in the temple village and existential chats with my co-conspirator Mike. I also spent a lot of my downtime writing and reading (The Essentials Guide To Tibetan Buddhism… so somewhat relevant) as well as dancing. It turns out the latter makes me INCREDIBLY happy and is a sort of meditation technique in itself for me.
When I was last regularly in therapy, a lot of my work was around the concept of mindfulness. If you’re unfamiliar, the teaching it is essentially structured around the idea of connecting the mind and the body as one through breath, or in other words: meditation. But it goes beyond this. Mindfulness is also the practice of distancing oneself from emotions, thoughts and feelings. My psychologist used to explain it as imagining all of my thoughts as clouds in thee sky, and watching the wind blow them out of view. This allows us to act from a more rational and objective point of view. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It has been almost four years since I’ve been in a psychologists office and I never knew that so much joy was possible for me 💫

Some things never get old ✨ but what does get old is how fast the years go by... as it nears the end of the year and decade I’ve been reflecting on all the things I have learned. Feeling so much gratitude when I see moments like this. The best is yet to come 🌅
