A near-forgotten element of European nature - elephants. Massive beasts with tusks and trunks of the order Proboscidea have been constant members of European nature for the last 18 million years, except the last 10,000 years on the mainland and (in dwarf form) 4000 years on isolated islands. Most of the time Europe has even harbored several species at a time, occurring in pretty much all climates and major terrestrial habitat types. The latest mainland species were the straight-tusked elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus) from 800,000 to 30,000 years ago and the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) from 400,000 to 10,000 years ago. The Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus) made a strong later westwards expansion reaching Turkey by the Bronze Age - nearly reaching Europe, depending on definition - before likely being pushed back by the rising human population. Similar stories of recent elephant loss apply to the Americas and northern Asia.
The photo shows Asiatic elephants from a circus bathing in the sea ( #tangkrogen ) at #aarhus in Denmark (my photo of a 1955 photo by B. Venge, exhibited during #aarhusfestuge ). #elephants#proboscidea#mammoth#elefant#elefanter#megafauna#megapast2future#semperardens#carlsbergfondet#fauna#nature#natur#wildlife#animals#extinction#extinctspecies#shiftingbaselines#aarhusfestival#enelefantkommarcherende #aarhusfestuge2019
