A WELL-known Kimberley resident, Brent Lunt, has been arrested in Zimbabwe for the alleged unlawful possession of rhino horns.
Lunt, 38, together with a Zimbabwean national, Nyasha Mutendawafa, 29, appeared in the Harare Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of contravening the Zimbabwean Parks and Wildlife Act, after allegedly being found in possession of four rhino horns on Tuesday.
It is believed that detectives from Harare received information from an informer that Lunt and Mutendawafa were in possession of rhino horns and were looking for a buyer. The detectives apparently lured the pair to Burgyward Road in Masasa.
The detectives then waylaid the accused, who were driving a Toyota Corolla. Upon identifying the accused’s vehicle as it approached, the detectives pounced.
They searched the two accused and the vehicle and recovered four rhino horns in a bag which Lunt was apparently holding on his lap.
They were asked to produce documents authorising them to be in possession of the horns and when they failed to do so, they were arrested.
They were questioned about the origins of the rhino horns and Lunt allegedly indicated that the horns were sent to him from South Africa so that they could look for buyers. He allegedly told the police that he had picked up the rhino horns from a bus, which came from South Africa.
The four rhino horns are yet to be sent to National Parks for valuation. The accused remain in custody until their next scheduled appearance later this month. From: dfa.co.za
