You stepped out of your comfort zone and rose to the challenge of an entirely different lifestyle, truly an alternative life path. Different from quite literally almost every person you know. You’ve learned to trust your gut, your God and your husband in deeper ways than ever before. Faith has risen, many times it’s been the only fathomable option in times of trouble. Fear has come in like a flood too, this year has been learning how to silence those voices and move forward in confidence, while living, loving, creating and sharing from the heart.
33 was one for the books. Fears were faced while learning to steadily relax into this new lifestyle. Abandoning all other voices, learning to listen to inner self grew into authentic self love, the kind that most would try to have you believe is ridiculous, flourished. Healing happened. A family that is non-traditional and amazing in all of the ways, was formed.

Alvord Desert photos from a road trip with the dudes @rparis74 and @dancefloorbathroom a few months back. You lose all sense of direction out there. Flying across the wide open desert, whiskey during sundown. We stayed in a bunkhouse (great find Rodney) at the Alvord Hot Springs which was far more comfortable than it looks. .

I absolutely loved this hot spring in the Alvord Desert because you can control the heat and keep it nice and toasty your whole soak! In fact sometimes it got too hot in there which is even better when the weather is below the 20s! We were surprised that there were 3 other small groups here during Thanksgiving and the bad weather but it was still very quiet & private, especially since we picked a campsite way in the back against the playa and were the only ones camped back there. You can camp on the playa for free but when it's wet from rain or snow it isn't advisable to go out there since it gets crazy muddy and your car can get stuck so if you're coming out here and run into bad weather the Alvord Hot Springs is a good alternative to camp at.
You can pay $30 to camp which includes fire ring, access road to the playa, free hot spring soaking at any hour, and free use of the clean (flushing!) bathroom. You can also pay $60 to use one of their bunkhouses instead which is like a metal container with heat & beds. To me it was a bit pricey for a campsite but being able to soak in the springs whenever you wanted, access to a clean bathroom, and use the playa access road at anytime was a plus (also wasn't a ton of options in this weather lol). You can also have a fire at this campground but no open fires are allowed on the playa based on my research. Alternatively you can try to find a free BLM campground or camp on the playa in good weather but still use the springs by paying $8 for day use to soak from 8am-10pm and $5 for use of the playa access road. We did see a free access road near here but it was steeper than the campgrounds access road and with the snow it seemed a little sketchy but we think we'll try using that access next summer when we're back! "The greatest part of a road trip isn't arriving at your destination. It's all the wild stuff that happens along the way". I mostly agree with that but I mean the final destination is usually pretty epic lol! Joe and I are actually used to driving a lot since we try to hike most weekends and our day trip drives range from 2 hours round trip (best case scenario) to 6-8 hours roundtrip depending where the hike is. This was our longest drive in awhile though which took almost 11 hours ONE way because of the bad weather and stops along the way. We had some hiccups on the way there and on the way back but overall the journey was so much fun with a lot of beautiful and funny moments.
The desert gives me so much nostalgia for my teen years in Texas and road trips in general give me nostalgia for childhood growing up as an Army brat and moving constantly. My favorite moment from this drive aside from the scenery and good conversation was definitely driving back home at night taking a different route than the one we came from and going down pitch dark frozen roads while listening to scary stories on Youtube through our car speakers and freaking each other out lol! We experienced this on empty desert roads and roads surrounded by thick dense forest while our brights lit up the trees and I half expected to see something lurking in the darkness. I love that Joe appeases to my horror addiction lol. What's the most recent road trip you've been on?

We had a blast this holiday weekend exploring the Alvord Desert covered in snow. Crazy beautiful place with a lot of solitude. Definitely will be back this summer when it is dry and clear to camp on the playa and do all the hiking we missed out on. This was also our first holiday trip as a married couple. This little remote hot spring in the high desert was one of my favorite experiences of the trip because we were the only ones here and it really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. The snow had been falling since last night so the drive there was a little scary and eerie and we only saw 2 trucks going the opposite direction. We were worried the spring wouldn't be warm enough but it was plenty hot and it was so peaceful soaking in the springs watching the snow fall around us and enjoying the quiet. I love how deep and wide the springs are, the soft squishy bottom, and the large flat rocks to sit on around the sides.
The gravel road is all season but the last bit is a soft dirt path that gets very muddy after rain and is impassable in a car. The snow and ice made it easy enough to drive but I wouldn't go when the snow melts or after rain unless hiking in (but not sure where you would park the car before the access road). There is a BLM campground here with picnic tables, pit toilet, and you can camp for free nearby and enjoy these springs. During good weather you can witness wildlife sightings supposedly and people have seen pronghorn antelope, coyotes, wild horses, rabbits, and deers. We camped at the Alvord Hot Springs because the playa was not safe to drive on with the snow and we only saw rabbits and birds but heard coyotes in the distance. I can't wait to go back to the Alvord Desert next summer to see the place without snow, camp on the playa, stargaze, and do the hiking we missed out on but I will say it was pretty magical with snow.

Hot spring soaks are 100x better in the snow! This was the 1st hot spring we got to enjoy this holiday weekend and it was amazing. The steam was crazy though and it was hard getting any good shots but the sunset was a golden pink fire! 🔥 Joe and I spent the last couple days in the Alvord Desert and it was so much fun! We didn't get to do any of the hiking we planned or camp on the playa because the snow came and covered everything and the playa isn't safe to drive on when it is wet since your car will most likely get stuck in the wet clay!
So we were a little bummed that we didn't get to see the desert looking like the Bolivia salt flats lol (especially since literally the past weekend it was dry and clear!) and there were also no stars out because of the snow clouds but we still had a lot of fun exploring this gorgeous area covered in snow, soaking in hot springs, camping, driving past abandoned stone houses, experiencing some epic desert sunrises & sunsets, and enjoying tons of solitude. We are already planning on coming back next summer ASAP to camp on the playa, hike, and do all the activities we intended to do and I can't wait! I also can't wait to see what other holiday adventures we will embark on in the future as we plan to do our own thing every other year! How was your Thanksgiving?

One thing I love about #vanlife is the night photography: being in the right place at the right time and having the storage capacity to bring a tripod and camera gear.
