The EPA Victoria's AirWatch currently rates air quality in Melbourne as Very Poor. It has fluctuated to Hazardous at times.
According to the agency, this means "many people might have symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath." They also suggest that you "avoid being outside in the smoke or dust. Reduce prolonged or heavy physical activity." Simply put, if you are engaged in moderate/strenuous outdoor work today without adequate respiratory protection, your employer is quite possibly in breach of their duties under the OHS Act.
It’s been a devastating start to 2020 with bushfires in Victoria, this morning staff at Trades Hall observed a minutes silence after the death of Victoria firefighter Bill Slade.
Union members and working people have come together to help. We’re calling on you to offer up your skills. Can you volunteer your time to help build a fence, cook and serve food, handle hazardous material or drive a bus or truck? Fire affected communities need practical assistance with rebuilding after this immediate crisis so we are collecting a list of people who can help.
