Took my alternator apart last night. I had noticed it was rattling a little, and wanted to investigate (which created a bonus learning opportunity, as I've not done this before). Turned out the rear bearing was all dried up (video 2). I cleaned it and re-greased it, which eliminated all the rattle (video 3). The front bearing was tighter and quiet, but I opened it up to look anyway and discovered some nasty old grease (photo 4). I cleaned and repacked that one too, and put it all back together. It now whirrs away with nary a whisper (video 6). New bearings cost about £20 each, so suffice to say I'm rather pleased with this free result of an hour's work.

You would think when a machine such as a Compression Spot Welder costs over $20k that you could trust that it will work properly every time. However that’s not the case these days. It is becoming normal practice in the industry to do a test weld each time before welding. They even say it should be done on the same metals that as you will be welding however that is almost impossible most of the time so I use welding coupons instead.

This is a quick tip on how to get some leverage on your ratchet even if you don’t have a cheater bar.
Before you do any major repair jobs I recommend that you scan the vehicle that way when you’re finished and you’re done your test drive you rescan the car and if anything pops up you know it is something that you created. That way you can go in there and fix it. Also if you scan the car before doing the major work anything pops up you can document it and cover your butt or get diagnostic time to address those codes.
