Sugar Tree Cafe Avoca, Kilmacanoge, Wicklow.
Overall Rating: 5.1/10
“Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like”. - Will Rogers
Nestled in the foothills of the Wicklow mountains. Close enough to the Pale to be relevant, yet just far enough from bray to feel safe. Today I visited Avoca Handweavers, a favorite coffee hot-spot of the yummy mummies of South Dublin. For only they would be stupid enough to spend €70 for a hand-knitted scarf. I reckon there are more ‘MILF mobiles’ (Range Rovers) parked outside this place then you’d find in Munster, Connaught and Ulster combined. I ordered the half roast chicken with coleslaw salad and chips. IT WAS €18.50!!!!!. I sit here writing this asking myself, “what in the world was I thinking.”
The waiter arrived swiftly with the chicken in tow. She should have said “bone appetit”. At first glance, everything looked good in fairness as the presentation was on point. But as the saying goes, “you should never judge a book by its cover”. The chicken was succulent and tasty but was bonier than a bulimic supermodel. I couldn't believe it. Just look at the second photo. The coleslaw and chips were pretty good, both with generous portions. Unfortunately they could not be truly enjoyed after the disappointment of the chicken. .
If this is what I should expect when ordering a free range chicken, I say you can put mine on whatever Arnie was taking because this isn't good enough. I decided to investigate further into this monstrosity of a bird only to find out that the free range organic chicken had been sourced in Co. Cavan. A county which is famous for being a shower of stingy bastards. Many people are hoping that they would end up on the other side of the soon to be ‘hard border’, but even the nordies don't want anything to do with them. .
I entered Avoca excited, as I have been to The Fern House Café before. I leave here wondering how this place survive The Great Recession when wealthy husbands began to wonder where their trophy wives were spending all their hard earned money.
Yours truly, .
There’s no such thing as ‘Cheat Day’ here, only ‘Meat Day’ 😂 This also happens to be one of the scrumptious $15 lunch specials 🤤 (weekdays only)

Place and memory.
When I was about 10 I lived on the other side of this lake. Whenever the mouth of the lake was opened I would take my boogie board out and enjoy the rare occurrence. When I see it now I am taken back to humming Scar Tissue and paddling out through the new mouth of the lake [ I thought I was the coolest person to have ever walked on a beach ].
Apart from the interesting phenomena, the reason I’m writing about it is to discuss the relationship between place, memory and their power to impact our day to day, overtly or subtly. How do we create these connections? Can design influence the manufacture of these connections? If you have any of these strong connections to places I’d love to hear about them.

Around 2PM today (17/09/2019) there was a house break-in on Hyacinth Road, Avoca. Three males in a Silver VW Polo Vivo with a NJ registration stole a TV and other appliances from the premises. A full check will be done to identify if any other belongings were stolen.
The same vehicle has been spotted earlier today in the Greenwood Park area looking into premises.

Couldn't think of a better way to say goodbye to my friends than spending a weekend annoying them with nature facts! Speaking of, Wicklow Mountains National Park is the of largest of Ireland’s six National Parks. The steep sided valleys and lakes of Glendalough were carved by glaciers over 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. This valley was once the site of a monastic settlement. The monastery was originally founded by St. Kevin during the sixth century, and was plundered many times by both local tribes and Norse invaders. The forest and heathland habitats are home to many species of wildlife, including Red deer, Sika deer, the Speckled Wood butterfly and the recently reintroduced Red Kite. Kites were driven to extinction in Ireland by the end of the 18th Century by a combination of deforestation, trapping and shooting. These spectacular birds of prey were reintroduced to Avoca, Co. Wicklow in 2011, where they can now be commonly seen soaring above the wooded valleys. Apologies to Av who thought we were going to see pretty red kites being flown until,I started getting exited by the birds flying overhead♦️ 🦅

As an affront to the typical residential coastal offering, @savioparsons_architects’ approach to the North Avoca House stemmed from a motivation to embrace the site’s many obstacles and create a contextually-responsive architecture. 💭

We were honoured to have this fabulous lady Anne Hogan in to celebrate her 99th birthday with us at Avoca Powerscourt today! So of course, we treated her to a slice of birthday cake and gave her a birthday gift - our Avoca Century Throw. It was great to chat with this lovely family - we even found out that Anne was the first Irish air hostess to cross the Atlantic back in the 1940s!
