One of the highlights from tripping this year was the 'discovery' of numerous pictographs peppered throughout our chosen routes. They weren't documented in guidebooks, route phamplets or any map. Instead, they remained hidden, waiting to be revealed to a keen eye with a knack for uncovering their typical whereabouts.
“The outdoors to me was chalk drawing on the sidewalk in front of my uncles barbershop MLK Blvd with my cousins. These were my outdoor moments.”
Repost from the introspective and creative mind of @wildginaa. Read her full thoughts on how experience affects what the outdoors means to us and the importance of sharing all forms of “outdoor moments.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When I was a kid, the outdoors to me were family BBQs in a Newark, NJ park, eating crab-legs with old bay seasoning out of a black trash bag, sipping on barrel juice, playing horseshoe, and making sure we were out of there by dark because you may hear gunshots. The outdoors to me was chalk drawing on the sidewalk in front of my uncle’s barbershop on MLK Blvd with my cousins. These were my outdoor moments.
See, the outdoors or “get outside” could mean just that but that’s all I knew until I joined Girl Scouts or 4-H camp...but what if MORE wasn’t given to me? I am incredibly lucky to have had those experiences. My single mother, working two jobs....did that shit. Thank you, mom. But, I didn’t think of Utah or these places because well, I didn’t know they existed. Hearing my classmates from the first day of school talking about their summer. “I went to the Grand Canyon!” “Wow, Todd! That’s amazing! I went surfing in Hawaii”. The northeast was my max.
When I see places like this, I feel like I fall back into being a kid. Fresh eyes. I feel lucky and privileged that I can pick my ass up today and give myself these moments. I may not have much to do it with but I make it work. No one is taking me on these trips. My ex of 10 years never did.
So, this is why I go by “take your friends/family to cool places” because there is MORE than drawing chalk on a sidewalk. Bring a friend, family member, or anyone. Just give someone else these experiences because most likely - no one else will.
