This post marks the first unique bird I had encountered in 2020. The photo shows a Barred-eagle Owl (Bubo sumatranus). As the name suggests, this owl has a pair of narrow buff bars (instead of eyebrow). It is very docile and has a pair of everwatching eyes. Actually this owl lives together with a family who had saved it after it had fallen from a tall tree 5 years ago.
Barred Eagle-Owl (Bubo sumatranus). A long time resident adult (with a damaged left eye) had a successful breeding season this year with a young adult nearby. #owl#barredeagleowl#bubosumatranus

special thanks to @jan.wildlifechannel for this wonderful shot! ⠀⠀
earlier this year, @jan.wildlifechannel, @sclater.photog and I went wildlife-spotting in search of the elusive Barred Eagle-Owl (𝑩𝒖𝒃𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒔). I may not be the biggest fan of birds, but I'm truly blessed to have friends who I can enjoy nature and go on outings like these with 😊 ⠀⠀
read on 👇🏻 to find out why 𝑩. 𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒔 is so elusive! ⠀⠀
a century ago, the barred eagle-owl was a resident species in Singapore. since the 1920s, however, they probably migrated to neighbouring countries and became very rare and didn't breed in Singapore. hence, despite its 'Least Concern' IUCN status, conservation of this real-life 'angry bird' is still crucial. ⠀⠀
this individual was spotted at Singapore Quarry in August 2019, much to the delight of many local birdwatchers a crowd of photographers had convened at a clearing, so it wasn't difficult to know when we'd reached our destination at the end of our long hike!⠀⠀
till next Monday, #staycurious !
October is coming to an end! Day 30 of #birdtober2019 with prompt by @aholmesartstudio is Owl. .
Presenting to you our Malaysian Barred Eagle-Owl or Bubo sumatranus. I’ve never seen it myself, not even in zoos but I’m so excited that we have such a unique species here in our land! Funny thing as I draw this owl it kept reminding me of Yoda in Star Wars!
Tried watercolor pencils again after such a long pause! Only one more day to draw birds and I truly enjoyed it. So inspired by all the unique styles other people use, hopefully I can learn a thing or two from their feeds!

Not an eagle! Eagle owls are characterised by their large size and two tufts of feathers on their heads. This Barred Eagle Owl (Bubo sumatranus) is a rare find in Singapore. It has been spotted sporadically since the 1920s, and is usually sighted in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Central Catchment Nature Reserve, and Pulau Ubin. An exceptional shot by @wccl123
Nama burung ini Beluk Jampuk(Barred Eagle-Owl), saat mau foto ni burung, pala dia muter dong, pas aq panggil dia "ganteng", dia nengok normal kepalanya kaya gini, langsung foto aja sambil ngakak 😂😂 #latepost#owl#barredeagleowl
