I’m in the process of trying to choose artwork for a few spaces in our home, and I’ve realized that choosing artwork is a lot like selecting the right vintage rug. It must fit the space in both scale and style, but more than that ... it needs to speak to you. Like a beautiful, patinated oushak that steals your heart when placed within a room, so too should the right artwork.
This beautiful canvas-in-the-works is by my friend, @emily_jeffords. I came to know Emily several years ago through the blogging world, and I’ve followed her work ever since. Her pieces are truly stunning!
If you have a favorite artist (or artists), leave a comment below tagging them! I’d love to see some of the artistry that speaks to you.
In this week's blog post I share heaps of ideas for how to plan and design the perfect family home and give you heaps of practical tips to think about as you plan for your needs now as well as for your future needs as your family grows and changes.
This is one of the most comprehensive posts I've written about family friendly design - make sure you check it out by going to the link in my profile @thelittledesigncorner and then clicking on this image. :) I'm sure you will find it really helpful!
This was my happy place today...along with hanging out in bed all morning watching #sweetmagnolias on Netflix (so good)! We brought in my painted cabinet turned shelf and....I’m not a fan of the color. Lesson learned...spray paint Serenity Blue is not the same as a can of paint. Back to the drawing board on this one because it’s just too bright of a light blue. So no big reveal quite yet on that one. But ⏪ swipe for a few in progress pics and I’ll keep you posted! We also had our first round of s’mores tonight and they were amazing! Hope y’all are having a great holiday weekend! 🤍

There's nothing better than that moment on a Sunday night of a long weekend when you remember that the weekend gets to last just a little bit longer! ✨

As a child I always looked forward to spending the night with my grandparents here because the sound of the creek through the open windows and my grandmother’s fresh linens made for the most restful and luxurious night’s sleep. Funny enough, I don’t know what it was she used in her laundry, but the scent of her linens was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. She has been gone since 2005, but the old linen closet still has that fresh scent.
She loved a pretty bed and was very particular about no one ever sitting on them once they were made. And beds were made first thing every morning. I guess I got that from her because I surely love and cherish getting to crawl into a fresh and clean bed after a long day and love getting it made up first thing in the morning.
For summer, I wanted to change some things around so I decided to use the yellow velvet portieres I rescued from a local historical building that was being sold. I made the bed with a vintage pink chenille spread I had along with an antique baby quilt from a family friend. I made the blue ticking stripe pillow cases, and my grandmother, Isabelle, made the sweet hot pink pillow. Along with her 1950s chalk ware lamp, the antique bed I restored from the property here, her trunk, the creek right outside my window, and a few other family treasures, my room has the exact feel I remember from my childhood.
It’s those little details that make things special, and the memories they conjure up are — to me — priceless❤️❤️❤️
A nod to the red white and blue for this Memorial Day.🇺🇸 My daughter and her BF came for the weekend and it’s been just perfect! Today is also our anniversary. 🥰 My hubby made bbq ribs and chicken on the grill and I made a fabulous batch of sangria. It was a tad too hot to eat outside so the dining room was happy to oblige. Nothing beats family time in my book.. .
A few friends stayed at our house this weekend to celebrate Chris’s birthday and it was so fun sharing our home updates! Hanging out around the kitchen island with people we love was exactly what we had in mind when we designed it. Swipe left to see the before photos of the kitchen 1 year ago!
Does your hubby help with the cleaning? Be honest? One of the many reason I love this guy...he is our deep cleaner in the house! I’m fantastic at surface cleaning though. 🙋🏼♀️🤣 Prime example of wherever I lack, Mikey always fills in the gaps! Ying to my yang. .
This weekend we celebrated 17 years together of laughter, parenthood, tears, loss, love, success, happiness, and everything in between! I’m no expert on marriage but...If I’ve learned one thing over the years it’s CHERISH the good in each other daily. Celebrate the things you LOVE, and ignore those insignificant things that could drive you crazy if YOU choose to let it! Cheers to many more years with this man that completes me in every way. ❤️
Charlie’s back to living his best life on our porch this summer. He’s pretty sure we built the porch solely for him as the sunbeams seem to hit just right. At the very least, he was clearly the inspo for decorating it. 🖤🤍
The rest of us are living out here too, but he always get first choice of seating because that’s how we roll. 🙈 #ineverthoughti ’dbeacatperson #butapparentlyiam

A few days ago I had this idea to create a custom art piece for our living room. I didn’t want to create a regular gallery wall for our living room but instead something that would be a conversation piece.
This handprint piece is exactly that. It holds a piece of every member of our family (Tristan’s handprint coming soon) and it will fit into any color scheme we decide for the space.
It was so easy to make since we used leftover paint from other projects and already had the frame.
On the blog tomorrow, I’ll be sharing exactly how to make it. Would you put a custom family handprint piece in your home?

WE DID IT!!! Today we knocked out the first half of our DIY minimal and modern landscaping!! It was SO HOT outside today, but we pushed through! We were drenched in sweat, but ended the day dancing in the front yard with the kids during an afternoon shower! It 👏🏻 felt 👏🏻 amazing to get outside and do some good ole manual labor! .
You can find the entire blog post and a million after photos at www.thisminimalhouse.com!!! Just click the link in our bio!
I can’t decide what my favorite part is...the timbers, the black mulch, or those delicious rocks!!! What’s your fave?!?
We picked our last bouquet of lilacs today. 😭 That lilac bush was the BEST surprise of this home!
It’s been a hot second since we’ve chatted about pets so I want to hear about yours! Chloe here is almost 5 and is a rescue from @secondhandhounds. We got her when I was pregnant with Roy and she’s as sweet as can be (and living her best life as you’ve seen in my stories 😂). Do you have a pet?! How many dogs vs cat people are there here?

Picnic under the trees. Brought peonies from my garden to sit on our table. I love picnics! I got busy in the kitchen and made mediretranean dip and brought cheeses and crackers, also cut veggies and dill dip, but the blackberry bars were amazing!
Spent the day here with friends from California. They visited us twice and decided to take a leap of faith two years ago.
maybe it’s just me, but our bedroom has to be spotless for me to get a good nights sleep.
ive been trying to be much more intentional with purchases for ourselves and our home.
really aiming to spend money locally, and if not that, more small sustainable shops.
that being said, ive been enjoying my @vellabox monthly candle subscriptions filled with clean burning candles, made from natural ingredients.
being home for so long, it’s funny the little things as simple as lighting a candle that will bring you joy.
this weekend max and i reused our empty jars from last months subscription to plant some herbs, and he loved every minute of it! #reusevellabox

Not the usual MDW we are accustomed to. I, like many of you, was supposed to be elsewhere, celebrating the love of two friends at a beautiful wedding, but here we are. So many of you have asked where I am at. We safely left NYC for warmer weather in the Carolinas, I’ll be sharing our lovely rental that was a god send at a later date. But let me tell you ... Fresh air, bare feet in the grass and simply being away from the concrete jungle for a while was good for me ... mentally, emotionally and physically.
This MDW we’ll be grilling out, drinking frozen drinks that CG has skillfully mastered and likely playing a mix of flip cup, code names and beer pong 😆 What do you all have on tap for this weekend?

What’s better on a holiday weekend than a pair of perfectly cooked steaks? Not much, unless you add our white bean, chorizo, and swiss chard fricassee, oh and a couple of cold ones 🍻. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many who don’t know us personally may not know that our own HFF member @youmansj1 spent many years in the food service industry, particularly fine dining steakhouses. Over the years of serving and managing he learned a thing or two about really great steak (and has converted us all to steak snobs tbh). So today, we thought we’d share a few of his tips for enjoying a perfect at home steak that you’d easily pay $60+ al a carte for at a great restaurant. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As prep work, we try to always get well marbled steaks (these have some thicker veins which aren’t ideal, but they’ll still come out yummy!) that are about 1.5” thick. We prefer ribeye or NY strip cuts for their superior fat content = better flavor and juiciness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) get your steaks out 30 mins before you cook them - sit them on the counter (out of reach of the doggies) to warm up to room temp. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) cover them on all sides with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper. the salt starts to pull out some of the juices which will help us get a perfect char (trust us, this is a good thing!)
3) while these are warming up, get your grill heated up to high (500+)
4) slap those babies on the grill, make sure you hear the sizzle to confirm your grill is hot enough, then... and this is key... DON’T touch them for at least 7 mins. Keep that lid on the grill - even if you hear a flame up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5) after 7 mins, flip them over, and you guessed it. don’t touch them! we are usually shooting for a medium rare plus or medium temp (depending on who we are cooking for), so 7-10 mins per side is all you need for 1.5-2” thickness.
6) after you pull the steaks off the grill you need to let them rest. they’ll continue to cook up to temp and it will help the steak to retain all of it’s jus vs cutting right in and letting it run all over your plate.

Michiganders will always tell you they are headed “up north” for the weekend during the summertime. A friend who moved here from out of state wondered what this miraculous “up north” place was and someone explained that it is “anywhere about 45 minutes north of where you live in Michigan.” And that’s where you will find me this summer!
What summer traditions do you have? Do you travel to the magical “up north” location?
Think succulent and majestic and you will find our Spanish Moss color. A much darker shade of dried sage it is a mix of greens and grays...just like Spanish moss blowing in a breeze. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Welcome to my little slice of heaven! This account will be used to document our everyday life, home projects, decor, and basically all the random things I get into!
Here’s a little bit about me...My name is Beka and I love Jesus, my husband, and my three amazing kiddos. I am an enneagram 5 and a photographer by trade. I love Michigan, music, house plants, bird watching, coffee, alone time, and chickens. Like I said...random stuff! 😂 •
We’re “semi-rural homesteaders” on our 2 acre land and currently have 7 chicken babes that we are slightly obsessed with. 🐥😍 I’m excited to share my journey with you and hope that you will, at the very least, find it entertaining. 😂

Peony + porch sitting all day. The week they bloom is always one of my favorite of the year! My husband bought me this new red one for Mother’s Day last year and she gave me the prettiest pom pom bloom.
☀️ It’s a long weekend and the sun is shining, enough said! I’m so thrilled to have the extra day this weekend because the last couple of work weeks have been longgggg. Are you doing projects this weekend or relaxing? I’m mostly relaxing 😊. Happy Saturday!
We have been enjoying our newly finished roof deck this weekend and I think my kids have died and gone to heaven. Roasted marshmallows every night, a toasty fire, a comfy sofa, and a tv, outside on the roof! Plus all the pretty stuff mom likes.
I’ve been showing you snippets in my story this week, which includes some more custom pieces built by Jimmy, French candlestick lanterns, and this amazing fire pit table. Swipe for the sunset view💫
All the details will be revealed over the next few days, so stay tuned.

My custom Maple dinning cabinet is done! My husband just added the hardware the other day, which I provided a closer look at in my stories. They are antique brass, with a flat iron rod. So a combo of metals. I love the warmth of the brass bolt with the table.
These beautiful Rose topiaries are air marked for my greenhouse, but made a pit stop in my dinning room this morning. Can’t wait to get them out to the greenhouse. They are really ready to pop!
I hope you caught my little drive I took you guys on in my stories today! 🚗 I can’t tell you how many messages I got from people asking for more videos around where I live and more info on this part of Texas! I definitely need to do a whole blog post about what it’s like living in the north Dallas area, and how it compares to other places we have lived (i.e. northern Cali, Arizona, Charlottesville, VA, and Seattle)...stay tuned for that soon! 🤗 Also, I’ve been rounding up some of the great Memorial Day sales this weekend! This gorgeous coffee table and the matching side table are on sale (clearance prices, in fact...the best price I’ve seen on these tables)!! Also, the Lady Bird rug (shown here in natural gray) is in stock in several sizes! Have a great night!
