Look at this magnificent Spotted Eagle-Owl curiously watching us from his perch... These owls are nocturnal, but this one was active mid-morning - and willing to pose for the nerds!
Spotted Eagle-Owls roost in large trees, shrubs or on the ground during the day - they become active at dusk, and hunt from perches in their territory.
They are the most common, resident owl in South Africa and have adapted well to urban environments - we have two pairs living in our neighbourhood.
This species has a typical owl hooting call. Males have a clear double hoot call, and females respond in a muted triple hoot call - proclaiming their territories and letting each other know where they are... They do not have many predators - they have been known to fall prey to Martial Eagles - but most mortalities are at the hand of man.
People are fickle - when we do not understand something we tend to fear it - and unfortunately owls are shrouded in superstition, resulting in the senseless killing of many of these ecologically important predators.
They are also regularly hit by vehicles when they forage for rodents, who in turn are attracted by spilled grains and agricultural produce that has been dropped on the roads during harvest. They are also one of the species which suffers secondary poisoning when rodent populations are controlled via pesticides.
