WELCOME TO THE FIRE SERVICE: FDNY, 9/19 GRADUATING CLASS
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) recently welcomed 301 probationary firefighters into the fire service. Among the graduates are 21 legacies, whose fathers gave their lives protecting New York City and 16 women, the second largest group in FDNY history. “Many of their fathers were killed on September 11th, several others died of World Trade Center illnesses, and others lost their lives in the course of their duty, bravely working to save and protect others,” explained FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro . “Today, these 21 legacies are no longer children dreaming of the careers their fathers loved, and of serving in the world’s greatest fire department – today, they have fully achieved their dreams.” Probationary Firefighter Rebecca Asaro, who graduated alongside her brother, Probationary Firefighter Marc Asaro, is following in the footsteps of their father, Firefighter Carl Asaro of Engine 54, one of the 343 FDNY members killed on September 11th. “Every day that I came to the academy, I was grateful to be there and to follow in the footsteps of my father, brothers, uncle, and all those who came before. This is exactly where I want to be,” said Probationary Firefighter Rebecca Asaro.
During their time at the FDNY Training Academy, the class was extensively trained in all aspects of their job as firefighters, including fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, auto extrication, building inspections, and procedures for engine and ladder operations.

Mondays are my favorite because lots of my favorite people around the country (and maybe world??) put on their green shirts purposefully because... on Mondays we wear green to shed light on mental health. On Mondays we start actively pursuing what God put on our hearts or refreshed in our hearts on Sunday. I like Mondays. If you want to join us, head on over to @next_rung and getcha a green shirt or become a changed lives partner! 🚑🖤💚🖤🚒
T - one day until I can start responding to calls! Six years between the first and last picture. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, late nights of studying, exams, and training! I’m very excited for what the future holds & for new life experiences😁
How many people do you see 👀 taking these levels of precautions? 🙌 Way to lead by example @arizona_ppe_recon 📝 “Always use universal precautions when handling soiled gear. Here at AZPPE it is our #1 priority to protect OUR most valuable assets! Our employees.” .
There are SO many levels to the mitigation game. There is a reason cleaning turnout gear ALONE will not solve the crisis of cancer in the fire service, but it is the most obvious first start and takes the heaviest hit on exposure. But what about when you are handling the gear? What about the exhaust fumes in the fire station? What about inside of the cabs after dirty gear has transferred toxins if #grossdecon was not properly performed? What about wearing your SCBA during overhaul? Layers and layers need to be peeled back to find the sources of carcinogen and toxin exposure on the job. .
For over 20 years, Solutions Safety has advocated best practices for health and safety ranging from the design of the fire house and where gear will be stored to simply cleaning dirty tools. This has not been an easy task!!! As many of you know, changing the “dirty badge of honor” in the fire service is STILL something all of us battle despite the staggering statistics. We know mitigating these risks can seem overwhelming and daunting to tackle, but keep it SIMPLE. Clean Air. 🌬 Clean Gear, PPE + Equipment. 👞 👕 ⛑ 🛠 🚒 Clean Body. 🚿 People wonder why we are still seeing cancer, and it’s because people are still fighting these steps. Thank you to everyone that is a part of what we like to call 🧼 “TEAM CLEAN” 🧼 Your brothers and sisters need you. Stay safe everyone. #citrosqueeze#fri2019#firerescueinternational#healthyinhealthyout#healthyfirefighters .
