Sure, they look angelic now, but swipe -> to see what they'd be up to if I left my plants in places they could easily access. Second to last collage for the #tinycatbuttbook is now complete :3
It's Thursday already?! I'll be on the plane to Paris before I know it and I have so much left to do. The plan of attack for this evening: pack, pack (for moving), work on new carrots, work on new chives, finish the last #tinysketchbookproject I have to insert in the Tiny Book of Cat Butts already in Brooklyn. Most grateful to @thesketchbookproject team for letting me ship it off on time and insert. I was going crazy with grad apps and desperately wanted to be a part of the project, couldn't have done it without their understanding. And I'm so excited to see it again in person! .
My shop will be opening Sunday, May 5, 2019 on Etsy! More details on Saturday, some changes have already been made to my site, so stay tuned. 🥂

Working on another tiny room, details in my stories! .
Whoa life has gotten real the past few weeks. I signed a new lease, began packing up my home of three years (it will be weird to have all 90° walls o.0), saw my youngest sister perform in Sweeney Todd, and I'm 17 days from going to Paris, France! I've never been to Europe and I'm so excited for the adventure my love and I will be embarking on shortly. .
I had planned to have a studio sale a while back, but found myself a little discombobulated with the rapid pace of change - seriously, I told my landlord I was moving and he had a showing scheduled for the very next day. It can be really hard to get things done for the studio after a 9-5 and needing to take time to make work. I'm learning to take time for my artself each day, because I need it, in the same way I set aside time for yoga after sitting still all day. .
The tiny spaces have been threefold for me. Keeping me positive, flexing my drawing muscles while learning about shape/perspective/angles/collage, and they're small. When I spend 1-3 hours and finish something completely it's incredibly satisfying, and the smallness of each one makes them even more so. I've always loved images that reveal more as you look closer. Things like children's books or medieval illuminations or Japanese screen paintings.
I love how this golden morning light makes art glow first thing. An encouraging start to this week. I have the others hanging in my cubicle as another small resistance act. You'll find that set in my stories - they're not as brightly lit and they're up against standard cubicle gray, but they're still a bit of sunshine for me throughout the day. .
This was definitely one of my most difficult makes over this past year. Super tiny tiles, figuring out perspective, and drawing myself. Based off what I remember from watching my mom and sisters wash their hair like this (could NOT find a good reference photo). And the cats! I almost never see them from that angle. .
A glimpse of how my making times go with two cats, both if whom act like furry toddlers. Captain frequently holds my workspace hostage by sitting directly in front of me, on a piece of paper I'm working on, head flat against my chest until I pet him. Huxley just wants to lounge about on the table if he doesn't find anything that smells good to him. .
Post my Year of Ginkgo, I still don't really plan my compositions ahead of time. I have an idea of what I want to do and go for it. Over the weekend I wanted an excuse to make a bathroom tile collage again, I enjoyed that so much when working on the Tiny Book of Cat Butts. As the apartment search has become serious, I find myself day dreaming of new spaces full of light and plants. This tiny series of reimagined spaces is giving me the freedom to explore objects and shapes I've never felt comfortable drawing before. .
Right now, I use watercolor and collage as my primary means of illustration. This arose solely out of the need to have something that could travel well and small, allowing me to work on something during my lunch break or wherever I happen to be. As a printmaker, my heart is always in the print studio, but right now the time element is tricky. Printmaking can be very time consuming given its process driven nature. This is something I greatly enjoy about printing. But I also need to make every day. When I don't, I become frustrated, antsy, and generally unhappy. .
Collage is a great tool to build ones confidence in form and creates texture/layers that might not being in your artist toolbox already. Watching a sheet of paper turn into bathroom tiles, plants, or french toast is truly a joy. It's given me a new level of confidence in my ability to convey an idea. I even admitted that I *can* draw out loud this weekend to another person and artist I greatly admire. For the first time ever. In my own way.

Saturday sketches post coffee chats, errands, and dangerous treks to the art supply store (I should never be left unsupervised in an art supply store... especially near the paper section). .
