Know Your BL Colours: Part 18
In a story filled with automotive dramas, few cars were more unlucky or unfortunate as the Australian-built Leyland P76.
For years, it was regarded as an automotive joke in Australia, a synonym for failure, the recipient of increasingly bizarre & outlandish apocryphal stories, but there was a gd car there though one which suffered from the poor quality & reliability of far too many ‘70s BL cars.
Nowadays, the car is getting an overdue reappraisal & I thought I’d conclude the BL ‘colour’ series by looking at a notable model built to celebrate an all-too-rare highpoint in its eventful life.
In 1974, London–Sahara–Munich World Cup Rally took place & was the sequel to the highly successful 1970 World Cup Rally which was won by Ford (& saw the creation of the Escort Mexico to celebrate).
The 1974 event was far less successful as it was in the aftermath of the 1st Oil Crisis & lacked strong works team support.
Anyway, a P76 driven by the legendary motor journalist & driver, Evan Green performed extremely well & won the Targa Florio section of the event. The car was performing well in the event itself overall when it got lost in the Sahara due to navigation issues on the event.
The team’s 13th place overall didn’t reflect how well it had performed but Leyland Australia decided to mark the car’s win on the fabled Targa Florio course. Some 900 cars were produced & while the ad announcing the car stated it was available in only 1 colour, 2 other shades were offered.
Colour 74: Omega Navy; the P76 Targa Florio’s original colour, but you can see why they picked it as this shade contrasted nicely with wonderfully period sliver stripes & mag wheels.
Colour 75: Nutmeg; one of Leyland Australia’s creatively named hues, this was an unusual choice for a ‘sports model’ & it’s the rarest of the 3 colours offered for the ‘Florio.
Colour 76: Aspen Green; Leyland Australia offered some pretty extrovert greens for the P76, but this was the most restrained & the right choice for this edition.
The P76 is a gd car to end this series as it had a few links with the Rover SD1 & that’s where the factoids are headed next.
