Do you know that one scene from Narnia when Lucy looks into the wardrobe only to find a magical world covered in the snow waiting to be discovered?
That pretty much sums up how I felt when I entered some parts of Changi Airport. Maybe not as dramatic, but you get the idea. Changi Airport can appear very futuristic & modern, yet if you let yourself wander further, you'd find lavish worlds of greenery, where technology meets nature's best.
In this painting, you can spot the Enchanted Garden (top left) & Sunflower Garden (top right) which shelters more than 2,000 sunflowers which are grown from seeds in the airport’s very own nursery. You can also see the Orchid Garden (zoom in for details, on the bottom left) and find the garden's signature orchids & a koi pond. Research says that koi ponds relieve stress and reduce anxiety, that's why Changi Airport has several of them! They want travelers to feel rejuvenated and be less stressed at the airport.
Meanwhile at the Cactus Garden (bottom right), you’ll get to see some cacti species which edible stems and fruits can be eaten raw.. or cooked (you choose!). They can be harvested to make candy, jam, even vodka 🥂 In the middle of this painting you can see a fragment of Humans Since 1982’s A Million Times, a mesmerising kinetic artwork. One last thing: Can you spot some droplets from another stunning art installation at Changi Airport: Kinetic Rain?
(1/4) It’s thrilling to see first-hand the devotion, creativity & passion that has been put into Changi Airport's Jewel & the rest of the airport. Changi Airport truly is another kind of Alice's rabbit hole--so many hidden gems, so many stories!it really deserves its title as the world's best airport.
When I saw Jewel for the first time, so many things caught my eyes & I was completely stunned. My mind was jumping back & forth from being captivated by this grand beauty before me to being panicked cos I knew I had to turn this into art ( no lies, i felt a bit nauseous back then) 😂 I knew painting this one wouldn't be easy. There's just no way I could do it justice!
should I start with the fact that you could see a rainbow circling the majestic rain vortex at 9 am every morning? or that the forest valley houses around 3,000 trees from all over the world? or maybe another fact about the dome which has more than 9,000 pieces of handmade glass & they were all carefully calculated & built to make sure the reflection won't affect planes & those driving on the road? or should I start with my own embarrassing moment about how I almost cried on the skynet, holding on for dear life when I was forced to conquer my fear of height? I felt like I was about to die having to walk 25m above the ground. I wouldn't have made it to the other side without the help of skynet's crew who had spotted me from afar & offered help. Seeing all these attractions on Jewel's canopy park really reminds me of how much of a scaredy cat I am 😂I didn't even have the courage to slide on this giant yellow futuristic discovery slide!
I could never paint Jewel as it is, but I hope you could see a glimpse of it's beauty through my eyes & my painting. I might not have the words to describe it, so I'll let your imagination run wild instead with this creation of mine. Enjoy ❤
