Another church but this one is a special one on the Isla de los Almas Navegantes, which is accessed via a 50m timber walkway. We were there on a national holiday that Chileans have to spend time at their lost ones grave. A beautiful and sobering place to visit ⛪️ #southamerica#churchesofchiloe#churches#chile

Churches of Chiloé: Colo Church.
When Spanish Jesuits first came to the islands at the beginning of the 17th century they initiated a peripatetic mission, travelling from village to village and island to island to spread Christianity. In so doing, they worked with local builders in each location they visited to erect churches that would be looked after by indigenous laypeople when they missionaries weren’t in residence. These churches are perhaps the greatest examples of a wholly unique style of architecture known as the Chilota School.
Another in the series of South American church towers, this time in the tranquil hamlet of Rilan on the island of Chiloe, Chile. We had a very relaxing time here and enjoyed making friends with the adorable local school children.
The large wooden churches of Chiloe are impressive. Inside the light and all wood interiors contrast with the stone versions I’m more familiar with. The ambiance is lighter too. #achao#chiloe#chile#wood#churchesofchiloe
We spent today driving around the island of Chiloé and taking the car ferry across to other islands. This was one of the more colourful examples of the famous UNESCO listed churches. #day29#churchesofchiloe#drivingonthewrongside
Chiloé and churches. All of them are made out of wood and some are UNESCO World Heritage sites. They’re a special blend of European culture and native building techniques. Overall, extraordinary. #chiloe#chile#patagonia#churchesofchiloe
