My ride took me to Valley Forge Park. It’s pretty hilly but a lot fun and some great views. So much history here. Any way after a trip through there it was on to the rest of my ride. At mile 16 I wanted to quit and it would have been an easy ride back with the route I took out, a straight 6 miles and I would have been sittin comfy in my Jeep. I decided to give it to mile 20 and see how I feel. By then I knew I had only 6 or 7 miles to go to the end of the trail and if I turned around I knew I would be unhappy so I pushed on. The worst part is looking at you car on the way back and then looking at your mileage and realizing you’re only a mile and half away from a nice round number so you push past your car when everything tells you to stop. #canthurtme#keephammering#bikems#focusbikes#reynoldswheels#continentalbiketires#40percentrule#valleyforgepark#history#nationalparks
Long post, conclusion in last paragraph.
Want to share a bit about my bike time improvements with minor equipment changes between first practice run second practice run and the #lakesidetriathlon time.
This summer I was really just trying out #triathlon so wasn’t going to invest in a road bike yet. I ride a #cannondale quickcx2 which is something like a commuter bike with front suspension and a mountain bikeish geometry (pics). The bike came with 38mm nubbly tires for trail riding combined with city streets. Thinking bike is around 25 lbs.
My 20km road time was maxing out at around 50 mins with my current level of training.
I hoped that this limit had a lot to do with a large amount of rolling resistance I was getting from nubbly tire friction on the pavement. Not to mention extra tire weight.
I looked at replacing the whole wheels with @huntbikewheels aero wide aluminum with #schwalbe slicks figuring that would cut a big chunk of weight out of my bike as well give me a very slight aero advantage (hunt wheel set is a full kg lighter than stock wheels). Ultimately I decided by the second practice run that I’m probably going to be all in on triathlon next summer so spending a 1/4 of the cost of a good road bike to add lighter wheels to my commuter bike doesn’t make sense.
What I did end up doing is buying a pair of #continentalbiketires ultra sport 2 (28mm) and leaving everything else as is. You can see in the pics looks pretty funny on the bulky frame.
On race day I ended up having what felt like a bad ride, but still took 6 minutes of my 20km time for a $50 cost!
In 3 weeks my time went from 1:45 to 1:32 for sprint distance tri and this was the single biggest contributor.
Posting some biking stuff again 🚲: i started into this weekend with exchanging the tires and brakes on my bike, both are upgrades related to the old tires and brakes. I'm looking forward to ride my bike still today. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
REBUILD: $25.00 on Craigslist! 80s Murray Monterey. Owner said the cog gear was broken. It wasn’t, the retaining clip was off a tad. 😊
Rebuild “Klunker style”- All bearings, coaster brake assembly cleaned and applied fresh grease. New parts - Continental “Traffic” tires, Goodyear tubes, Prymo grips, Aukmont classic style seat, Wellgo BMX pedals, Greenfield kickstand, Schwinn deluxe child carrier. Video - Excuse the handlebar creeks and loud tires. In person - they aren’t that loud 🤣. She rides solid and my daughter enjoys the comfy child seat!
Done ✅ Life always begins with one step outside your comfort zone.
Yesterday, I mentally, physically and nutritionally took many steps outside my comfort zone and am so glad it got me across the line of my first full Ironman. 🏆
Made all the sweeter for being able to share with my #1 supporter...and writer of my training program @mark.royden 🥰 - thank you 🙏 🙏 🙏
