Anyone who's spent any time with us knows we're cheap as hell. You can't live in LA on 6 month's salary, save for retirement, invest in properties AND travel half each year without being frugal! So when it comes to these trips, we generally stick to more affordable countries and we always choose our expensive activities wisely.
The most popular hot springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica cost nearly $100 per person for a day pass. And having been to some pretty great hot springs around the world already, we just couldn't justify the expense. But we quickly learned that literally across the road from the entrance is easy, free access to the same river. And personally, we prefer taking a dip in natural surroundings than in man-made ones anyway. So predictably, we hitchhiked there with a bottle of rum to experience Costa Rica's hot springs our way 😄
What we found were locals grilling food and playing music. Cascading pools snaking through the jungle, each tier warmer than the last. Adventurous tourists scrambling to reach the places where hot waterfalls flowed. We spotted wildlife and swigged Flor de Caña in the steaming water as day turned to dusk, then practiced our Spanish into the night with a family who insisted we share their beers. Time and time again, we find that the best experiences abroad are the ones that don't cost a thing 💗
