"A graduation is shorter on the bottom and longer on top. In this video, notice how each new section travels more than it’s guide. Because of this, each new section become longer than the previous section.
Want the new section to be even longer? Then make it travel even more. Want the new sections to get longer even quicker, the use a stationary guide.
Whatever haircut you are doing, just know your goal. Where do you want it to be short, and where do you want it to be long. Before you cut, see if your is likely to happen. If you’re happy, cut. If not, adjust. Then, check again.
I used to memorize haircuts. I even used to memorize theory. I also had so much self-doubt ...sooo much self-doubt that didn’t even bother to think for myself and I didn’t even trust my own eyes.
If you were or are in the same shoes I was, please know that you are waaaay smarter than you think you are. You just need to get out of your own way. I believe in you. You have to start believing in yourself."

I always love learning what my clients feel and wish that they could change. Often, it is as simple as working with the right shape and layers to define bone structure and enhance our best features. With the right haircut, you don’t need product and curling irons. You can air-dry and get great results. Sometimes our hair can drag us down and make our features feel elongated. Styling can be a solution, but even better...get a great foundational haircut! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good style, but what makes my heart truly sing is when you love your hair in its natural state too 💗

Hey y'all! So I've obviously been a bit dormant in posting over these past few months and there's been a reason for that. I really just wanted to experience and enjoy our craft without the "social media exercise" attached to it. I was asked today if it was because I felt "burnt out"... this is absolutely not the case. There is something to be said about exercising our craft without the social media context.
Build that shape solely for the person wearing it and not for the image that it may produce. Do that color application for how it makes you feel about doing it and not for the likes you might get from it. Do that thing that makes you FEEL the thing that made you want to do it in the first place.
Today my brother @jaywesleyolson and I collaborated on @chrysteena and we documented for posterity's sake. Here's some of it coming together.
As always, I cut with @mizutaniscissors_official at @thebespokesalon and our shape was inspired by the classic @sassoonacademyofficial Havington. As always feel free to drop me a line with any craft questions.
You have to swipe left to see the before! This young lady had done home hair color twice and a home hair color remover in less than a week! You will notice in her before the roots are warm and the ends were left lifeless and dull with a green hue. Home hair color is so unpredictable and difficult to correct. We were able to achieve what you see in one appointment (4 hrs) amazing! This would usually be two appointments. This hair made possible with four bowls of lightener with bond builder @redken and two different toner formulas were used #shadeseq of course! And final treatment was a deep conditioning treatment and gloss. Correcting color requires an extreme amount of patience and formulation and heaps of time and money. I love it when everything turns out beautiful in this situation, because the truth is it is extremely hard and unpredictable correcting color✨🖤✨🖤✨🖤✨🖤✨ #michellekrausehair#colorcorrection#redken#shadeseq#portlandcolorist#pdxstylist#pnwstylist#portland#pnw#loveyourhair#crafthairdresser

#stylistselfie Obsessed w/ my freshly razored shag from @corinna.at.pony ✨ And no filter so I can show off my very own, all natural hair color for the first time in forever. Thanks Corinna for giving me the best haircuts of my life 🖤 Air dried w/ a cocktail of @aghair Recoil and Glow, and styled dry w/ Dry Lift to add grit, texture, and volume to my fine hair.
Line + Graduation
When my clients want their perimeter thick but also want it beveled, I combine line (aka one-length) and graduation.
I start out creating a line. That means all the hair falls to the same point vertically. On my mannequin, I just happen to choose to make it shorter in the back and longer in the front horizontally.
When I reached a section higher up on the head, I started graduating the hair. I did this by making my new section travel down to the last section that I used in creating a line. This made the new section longer than the previous section. As I went up the head, each new section got longer than it’s previous section.
I hope this inspires you to get to know the fundamentals, put them together and create/customize haircuts to better serve your clients. I used to memorize haircuts ...and it was exhausting. I was always worried that someone would sit in my chair and ask for a haircut I haven’t memorized yet.
I was driven by fear, not by passion. If you can relate, I really want to help you get out of that situation, help you enjoy your being a hairstylist to the fullest and find so fulfillment in serving your clients. That is why I put out the type of content I do here on Instagram.
I really hope you got some “aha” moments from this visual. If you have a friend who might find this post helpful too, I’d super appreciate it if you tag them.
You got this, friend! I know you do! ❤️💪❤️
