Didn’t expect to find a 3500 year old Egyptian Sphinx in Croatia! Twelve sphinxes were originally brought to Split after Diocletian put down a rebellion in Egypt somewhere around the year 297. Unfortunately, only one survived and is now standing at the Peristyle here in Split and is believed to date from 1500BC!
The sphinx is made of black granite. Just like a major part of the palace itself, the sphinxes were decapitated and destroyed with arrival of Christianity. Probably as a backlash for the Great persecution Diocletian was responsible for in trying to wipe out Christianity. He didn’t succeed but why this one still stands remains a mystery.
Anywhere we travel in the world, we start yearning for home food pretty much sooner than later. And that’s because food is intrinsic to our culture , how we have grown up, the geographical location, the weather, the economic state, the values, the principles behind eating habits... basically everything.
Hence, in order to really experience the culture of a place you are traveling to, eat local food (pick up stuff from the farmers market). What’s the best thing you have eaten during your trips??
