There is so much going on in this short video. Many would see a couple of anemone fish just swimming next to their anemone just enjoying the day. So let me explain what you are seeing.
At the beginning the pair of anemone fish chew back the limestone and clear it of algae before eggs are laid. Both the male and female have white raw lips from doing this.
The large female then lays her eggs, followed by the smaller male fertilising them. Some of the eggs come loose, both fish try to eat the eggs and not let the precious things go to waste.
The male continues to do something strange, by biting the anemone and chewing it's tentacles. I don’t know why he does this. Maybe it numbs his lips after being made raw after chewing back the limestone. I would be interested to hear what people have observed and why this behaviour happens.
Amazing to see all this behaviour in such a short period of time. Anemone fish are incredible animals to watch and film.

Posted @envirotechdiving Enviro-Tech Diving has just completed it's annual pipeline inspection in the arctic. 80 miles north of Kotzebue Alaska. The ice in the bay had just started to break up and allow for boats and divers to get out to site. Great work team!

See a light at the end of the COVID tunnel. As diving slowly opens back up in Phuket and around the world, I can't wait to get back to my fishy friends.
This photo comes from my first time diving at Hin Klai. It was awesome!
Thomas Canyon Part 3: This clip shows the final descent down to the cave at just short of 100m. The visibility was outstanding, the deep blue colours in the canyon were so wonderful. What an amazing #RedSea dive!
I’ll post the last clip tomorrow showing the ascent from the depths and back into the light
