“A large section of the Drakensberg is a World Heritage site on two counts. It is firstly the largest collection of rock art in the world. More than 30,000 examples of the San or Bushman are found in this mountain range. Also, as a result of its unique fauna and flora. This makes it one of just over twenty world heritage sites to receive this status on two counts.”
Things we’d hoped to do:
Dec – Jan temp: 25- 28 degrees
Hours of sunshine: 8.1 hours
Flight time: 12 hours
Want a hotter climate without jetlag? Well South Africa could be just the ticket, with just a two hour time difference you could get an overnight flight and wake up feeling fine (depending on how well you can sleep on flights – maybe treat yourself to an upgrade?) Fly to Cape Town and visit Table Mountain which towers over the city, the penguin colony on Boulder's Beach, the wine estates and Kruger National Park.
The city of Durban was included in ABTA’s Travel Trends 2019 as a top destination to visit. Stunning beaches border the fun and buzzy city of Durban which is also close by to Kwa Zulu Natal – incredibly, diverse landscapes and chance to see the “Big Five” animals, the unforgettable Drakensberg Mountains and the ancient rock art of the San people.
South Africa offers huge range of experiences and is a great value destination for all travellers.
When pictures of South Africa take your breath away. This pic is borrowed off the website of this beautiful place in Kwa Zulu Natal ... isn’t she beautiful?! Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the Drakensberg 🏔 .
We have different layers in our brain, we have the forebrain, the medial prefrontal cortex (the executive center which allows us to see things objectively). Objectivity means even-minded. We have the subcortical regions, the amygdala, which is involved in avoiding pain, seeking pleasure, avoiding predators, seeking prey, avoiding with instinct, pains, and going with impulse towards pleasures. In order to survive out in the wild, that part of our brain had what they call 'confirmation biases' and 'disconfirmation biases' with a positive slant or positive bias to make sure we are protected from predators eating us and from prey getting away from us. So we exaggerate with subjective biases, all the way to infinity over one and one over infinity, with our perceptions. When we are highly emotionally charged, we distort our reality. The degree to which we distort it, we don't see the magnificence of it, then it runs our life! There's a hidden order in our existence!
When we actually see things in a perfect balance, we access that hidden order in our apparent chaos. Whoever has the most order is the one that gives the orders, they're the leaders, they're the ones that will have the most certainty. The second we have the subjective bias distorting our reality, we're caught, automatically being run from extrinsic sources exogenously, instead of actually being intrinsically called towards a purpose in life. That's why purpose, telos, the calling, the primary objective, the mission in life, takes us into our executive center and gives us mastery of our future
Instead of being a victim of history, we become a master of destiny!

This is still one of my favourite berg images from about 2004. I love the colour, the composition works and the clouds really bring it all together. However, it almost didn’t happen, as the other two images show. I had seen this spot on a previous hike and just knew it had to be photographed. I went back for a two day trip, and things were very misty and overcast. Not looking good! So the next morning I opened the tent door to a total white out, nevertheless crawled out with my gear and set up for the long wait. An hour later alpine glow was over, but I stuck it out. Another 30 minutes went by and I started to detect some light filtering through, I willed it on. Then it all came together, the light shone through, the clouds formed up into something I could not have wanted any more perfect and I took two exposures. Bearing in mind this was on my Pentax67ii medium format film camera and I only had 10 exposures on a roll. In about two minutes it was gone as the mist and clouds rolled back in. An ethereal moment captured on film. I exposed one roll of 10 and that was all I shot that whole weekend. Actually I only took up two rolls of film, which was my enforced control, only 10 shots per day. #southafrica#southafricanroutes#N3Gatewayfirstname.lastname@example.org#drakpix#drakensberg#drakensbergmountains#ukhalambadrakensbergpark#drakensberghikes#scenicphotography#landscapes#outdoors#wanderlust#landscapephotography#pentax67ii#fujivelvia50rvp#pentax67
Feeling exhausted at this stage of the hike, 2/3rd of the way up, the only motivation to keep going was the light filtering through the peaks & @davidclancyfilms stoke on life!

I’ve made it to 🇿🇦 South Africa 🇿🇦 and am officially teaching my very first retreat ever!! To even write that sentence about myself seems like a typo. Africa, alone, was just this gorgeous continent I used to point to while teaching my kids geography while homeschooling. I truly never believed I would travel in my life the way that I am. Maybe I put myself in a box. Maybe I didn’t allow myself to dream too big. Maybe it’s that. Or maybe now ... I’m in the season of becoming. #RISINGUPSTRONGER

Engulfed in a solitude of my own, my tiny orchestra of bones, worshipped the rolling eons of stone.

This picture was taken at the Amphitheatre of drakensberg mountains.
I went on this hike thanks to @blackcasegirl_za . If you are looking to travel beyond Johannesburg and Capetown while in South Africa, you will have to plan ahead regarding moving from one place to another. 🌍
Yes, there is public transportation in SA but in some cases, like this one,you have to either rent a car, a cab, go with a tour group or hitch hike
If you are travelling with friends and you wish to see South Africa beyond the main cities, the best option is to rent a car.
Details on renting a car in SA on the blog :)
