An uncle playing the erhu at our neighbourhood train station- He only knows how to play “Row, Row, Row your Boat”, and not very well at that. It’s a screechy and very loud ordeal that lasts all day. Nobody really minds though, because the unspoken reality is that we know he can’t, and doesn’t actually play. Just like many other elderly like him don’t actually play, but take the instrument to busy intersections of foot traffic anyway, busking for change.

1. Figure out how much help they need
Before making any decisions, it’s necessary to find out how much help your older adult needs and compare that with how much help is already available. Previously, we’ve talked about understanding their needs in 8 key areas of life and being realistic about how much help family will provide.
First, make a list of everything your older adult needs help with on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Being able to see the whole picture helps you choose the correct level of care.
Next, be realistic about how much help you, family, or friends and neighbors will provide. It’s important to think about this in terms of long-term, ongoing help – a few weeks or months isn’t going to be enough.
After comparing those two lists, you’ll have a better sense for the tasks your older adult will need additional help with – anything that isn’t already covered.
In some cases, looking at this list makes it obvious that in home care will work best. In other cases, assisted living might be the clear choice.
2. Understand key differences between in home care and assisted living
Before you can choose between in home care and assisted living, it’s important to understand how they work. Here are the basics and key pros and cons for each.
In home care: pros and cons
In home care is when a caregiver is hired to come into the home to help seniors with activities of daily living. This enables your older adult to continue living safely at home.
The specific help provided depends on the older adult’s needs and could include meal preparation, getting around the house, transportation, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, etc.
Senior gets one-on-one care tailored to their needs and preferences
Senior can stay in their home or a relative’s home as they age
Costs can be lower depending on hours of care needed and caregiver skill level
Family gets to choose the caregiver
Senior gets to know one caregiver, rather than being cared for by many different people
Flexibility in care arrangements: different types of care could be combined to lower costs, increase social interaction, or provide medical-type care – family help, adult day programs, privately-hire

This week I’m working with charcoal and also continuing learning egg tempera. (I’ll post one of those paintings tomorrow, hopefully!). I fell in love with this face. What are the stories behind his wrinkles? What pain, joy, difficulties, hopes has he experienced? Doing this drawing makes me miss sitting with my dad and listening to his stories. It also makes me realize how blessed I am to have my mom, mother-in-law, and father-in-law still alive. All in their 90’s!! I need to get their wrinkles drawn while I still can! Each day is a gift. Let’s not take them for granted! #portraitpainting#portraitsociety#elderlypeople#wrinkles#charcoaldrawing#workeveryday#itsaprocess#acostastrongfineart#lynnsamisart

The monthly Seniors Tea for Two event, an initiative by Sophie Clifton-Tucker (Little English, Gibraltar Magazine & Gibraltar Business) and Jason Harper (B2 Projects) took place yesterday and had a great turnout.
Hot drinks, cakes and sandwiches were enjoyed by all whilst well-known tunes from the 30s and 40s played in the background.
One attendee voiced their pleasure at being able to get together socially with others once a month, where ordinarily they would be at home with not a great deal to do. “I’m so pleased I came. I’ve seen people I met at the last event and we’ve had a catch-up. It’s lovely!” If you know anybody who could benefit from these events, or if you would like to offer your services, or just some of your valuable time, please get in touch: email@example.com

“Hard work is painful when life is devoid of purpose. But when you live for something greater than yourself and the gratification of your own ego, then hard work becomes a labor of love.” — Steve Pavlina

First Graders were excited to meet the residents at the Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence. Many of the students were recognized from their Kindergarten visit, and others were warmly welcomed for the first time. They sang a variety of autumn and Halloween songs to the residents and had great conversations with them. It was a feel-good day for all!

🇮🇹 Oggi Aldo avrebbe compiuto 92 anni.
Auguri Aldo mio. ❤️ 🇬🇧 Today Aldo would have turned 92. Who knows how he would have commented on my adventure with Emanuele.
"The dead goes into the coffin and alive goes party" the wicked will think. And fortunately, I add.
We should never let the death of someone we love kill us too.
Part of us goes with them, it's true, but equally part of them continues to live within us and thanks to us. This is what we need to focus on and cherish if we want to respect the meaning of life and pay tribute to every day that has given us.
If I had gone, I would have been happy to know him with a new-found smile, having fun and spending time with our nephew. And if he too had undressed a little - for a good cause and a ‘look but not touch’ ...
In our society we are mainly focused on being young, fast and dynamic.
We cover up being old in many ways, socially, personally and emotionally.
I often noticed that we basically no longer know how to handle becoming older.
Growing old is such an inevitable part of life it should be embraced with a light heart and years worth of wisdom and planning.
Grow old, age well and enjoy this inevitable journey!

🇬🇧 Worldwide friends: as you probably know, Italy has never been a boring Country. This week loads of newspapers, blogs, tv and radios are talking about me and my lovely grandson @elousai . They are impressed by how he stubbornly made me a celebrity from scrap, thanks to this Instagram Profile, after my beloved Aldo passed away.
This is not common, I agree, but I think that love towards grandmas and respect for #elderlypeople should be something absolutely normal. Isn’t it?
I’m sure lot of people all over this planet are going above and beyond in order to improve life for #elderly people in the most amazing ways. Like the incredible @mymakeovermission , with their wonderful initiative of re-awakening the inner beauty of the often forgotten women in #nursinghomes . Or the @vollpension_wien , where students and #retiredpeople work together to connect 2 generations.
I love to hear and spread this beautiful inspiring stories. Does Someone know any other interesting project which improve elder life?
No?
