💭Monday thoughts... How can our food system offer a solution to the climate crisis?
1. Complimenting efforts that reduce fossil fuels with models that capture carbon dioxide and "undo the damage we have already created", says a UN report that cited that our food system accounts for 37% of GHG emissions 🌎.
2. From land use and farming practices to food waste initiatives and diet choices, there are opportunities within our food system to address climate change (undo the damage) and improve food security while we're at it (a win-win? Yes✔!).

It's #MindfulMonday ! We hear a lot about environmental destruction, but very little about the environment itself. For a moment, think about your surrounding environment where you live. What makes it tick? What makes it unique? How does it affect the beings that call it home?
For example, Pagan Earth Alliance began in the Pacific Northwest, where this photo was taken. There, it's home to conifers and black bears, orcas and sea lions, rivers and mountains. The bioregion is called a temperate rainforest with cold temperatures and high precipitation. Hiking is a favorite past time there, where the sounds of crows cawing to warn others of your presence and ferns grow from old Douglas fir stumps. A light drizzle may pick up, along with the scent of soil amidst the moss.
What is it like where you are? What beings exist that depend on its surroundings? And what makes your home so unique? 🤔
If your company needs to “remediate” or clean up environmental contamination, the expenses involved can be tax deductible. Unfortunately, every type of environmental cleanup expense cannot be currently deducted. Some cleanup costs must be capitalized. For example, remediation costs generally have to be capitalized if the remediation adds significantly to the value of the cleaned-up property; prolongs the useful life of the property; or adapts it to a new or different use. In addition to federal tax deductions, there may be state or local tax incentives involved in cleaning up contaminated property.

Following years of pressure from #environmental groups, the #Food and #Drug Administration ( #FDA ) has issued recommended guidelines regarding the amount of lead allowed in #lipstick and other #cosmetics .
" #Lead is a #chemical element for which #toxicity in #humans has been well documented," the FDA wrote in its draft guidelines, issued on Wednesday, as reported by the Hill. "Cosmetics manufacturers are responsible for avoiding potentially #harmful levels of lead in their finished products."
The new limits call for no more than 10 parts per million (PPM) of lead in lipstick, #lipgloss , #lipliner , #eyeshadow , #blush , #shampoo , and body #lotion .
The campaign for #SafeCosmetics has called out the FDA for not acting on the problem of lead in beauty products ever since publishing its 2007 study "A Poison Kiss", which found that 61% of lispticks contained lead up to .65 ppm. A 2010 follow-up stufy by the FDA found levels of up to 7.19 ppm, with the highest levels discovered in brands including #CoverGirl , #LOreal , and #Revlon .
The campaign pointed to studies that found any amount of lead exposure is unsafe and has been linked to #neurotoxicity , reduced #fertility in both men and women, hormonal changes, and delayed onset of #puberty .
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), however, belives the new guidance does not go far enough. Lead has no place in personal care products, especially products marketed to children, who are especially #vulnerable to the #toxic effects of lead. While we welcome renewed attention from FDA, we urge the agency to prohibit the presence of lead in lip products marketed to #children and to require a #warning on all personal care products that contain lead," Scott Faber, senior vice president of governmental affairs for #EWG , said in a statement.
Over a decade ago, a plastic processing plant in Ontario had a significant spill involving tiny polymer beads. As there was no way to efficiently clean the spill up, a material screen was put in place to contain it. As the years went by, the screening material eroded through and breached the containment area so the beads began to wash out through drainage pathways.
Super Sucker has always been at the forefront of technological innovations within the vacuum excavation industry and with advanced dry suction excavators in its fleet from @OxEquipment, their highly trained operators were able to rewind the progress of the spill and safely excavate the polymer as well as the screening materials.
All excavated materials remained dry and were able to be dumped into roll-off bins which allowed the equipment to remain on site working until the job was complete.

Welcome the FTC team Ro2D2 @ro2d2team in the Eco FIRST Community!
Ro2D2 is a team from Ploiești, Romania, which believes that the people who choose to make advancements in technology should not forget about the environment.
Apart from all the community projects the team has held, they chose to give an example and show the people that after all, the only thing that matters is what Earth gave us. So they gave up a day of programming and building to clean up their community!
As well, the team is constantly looking for ways to interact with the environment through STEM while damaging it as little as possible. Recently they've created an interactive 3D map to easily manage all the biosphere from a botanical garden.
Ro2D2 wants to encourage the FIRST teams, as well as others, to take initiative and do something that will clean and protect the environment!
From now on, we encourage everyone to make changes in their lifestyle so that their actions will produce less waste and thus live a better and healthier life!
Join us, the Eco FIRST Community, and make a change!

What if we could quite literally make Arctic ice, in a bio-benign way, that could restore balance to this precious, and struggling, ecosystem? That’s exactly what Steven Desch and his team at Arizona State proposed: to build and deploy millions of wind-powered pumping installations in the Arctic that would pull water from the ocean depths to the much colder surface, freezing it and adding critical thickness to the sea ice effectively and quickly. By pumping water directly below existing ice (where it’s notably colder), one turbine could thicken the ice by 3.3 feet over 25 acres in one winter alone. Basically, this process would enhance a naturally ongoing process in the Arctic that we have disrupted with the heating climate. And it wouldn’t be necessary to add ice to the entire Arctic Ocean - if pumps were dispersed over only 10% of the Arctic for a decade, it would be enough to hold off catastrophic loss and give us time to decarbonize. Now, it wouldn’t be cheap. It would cost an estimate $500 billion over a decade, most likely requiring international effort to both scale and fun. But, if we did it, the potential is incredible. ⠀
Although technological innovation cannot solve the climate crisis, it IS possible to make a real difference and shift our trajectory. Creative solutions like this are expensive, but feasible, and if you think about it? There’s nothing better to get behind than ensuring a livable and safe planet. #groundedinsolutions

What is it?
Refrigerators and air conditioners contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), chemicals that enable chilling. Recently changed from Chlorofluorocarbons to avoid depleting the ozone layer, HFCs are still environmentally destructive. The most common HFC is 1430 times more damaging to the climate than CO2, and their emission is still growing.
How will it impact us?
By avoiding HFCs, we will reduce the amount of CO2 by 89 gigatons. The decrease of HFCs is an effective solution but it is not a cheap one and will cost $903 billion by 2050.
There are two ways to combat the increase of HFC emissions, which do not require the cut back on refrigerators or air conditioners. The first is to use natural refrigerants such as propane and ammonia. These are already in use in India and China but not yet common in the EU.
Another solution is to start recycling and reusing these chemicals. Effective disposal of HFCs is essential as 90% of emissions occur at the end of their use. Refrigerants can also be purified for reuse or transformed into other chemicals that are not harmful to the environment
What do the statistics say?
The Kigali accord has been agreed upon by 65 countries and enforces the gradual decrease of HFCs using phase down strategies. If the countries adhere to these amendments we can expect:
1. The use of HFCs to be reduced by 80% over the next 30 years
2. To avoid 0.4oC of global warming

This is our first Kinnarps truck, purchased in 1959. That was when our founders Evy and Jarl realised that in-house delivery gave our customers a better service. With their own transportation, they could influence delivery times, routes, finances and, last but far from least, the service they gave their customers. Today, our own BLUE TRUCK CONCEPT is the backbone of a unique, sustainable and environmentally friendly logistics system where we control every link in the chain.

Groove Tubes (vintage Sovtec- electronic tubes) and text on foam board and wooden frame
Not sure how I got them. But I like the looks of it. They came in Soviet boxes with Soviet text. What you say, Soviet? You mean Russia. No, these bulbs come from the Soviet era; they are what you might call vintage. ‘когда Восток был еще.’ more verbals @ https://www.maritotto.nl/verbals/

Does your Nation do this? 🇩🇪 🇸🇪 🇳🇴 🇫🇮 🇺🇸 🇨🇦
Wanna know more? — “This legislation was passed in 2002, and it has met with resistance from retailers and those in the bottling industry.
Cans, and single-use glass and plastic bottles can be returned to retailers for a refund of 25 cents.
Refillable bottle rates vary, and wine bottles can be returned for a 2 cents refund, beer bottles will get you 8 cents, and crates of bottles can get you 1.50 Euros.
Most supermarkets in Germany have a reverse vending machine, which can scan returns and gives you a receipt for the total value of returned items that can be exchanged for cash or used for money off purchases.
By law, German shopkeepers are required to keep the pavement in front of their premises free from litter, regardless of where the litter came from. If they fail to do so, they get a warning from the council and face a fine.” - @planetgreeeen
