Joana Choumali wins 2019 Prix Prictet photography prize and becomes the first African artist to win this prestigious prize.
Choumali won for her series Ça va aller (It will be OK), which comprised photographs that were taken three weeks after the March 2016 terrorist attacks at the Grand Bassam beach. She embroidered ornate patterns on the images, describing the painstaking process as “a way to address the way Ivorian people deal with trauma and mental health”. ————————————————————————
The attacks, she said, “reopened the mental wounds left by the post electoral war of 2011”. The tactile art of embroidery was a way to process those painful memories. “Each stitch was a way to recover, to lay down the emotions, loneliness and mixed feelings I felt." ————————————————————————

"Time Machine" 2017-2019 Chiatura / Georgia.
Published by National Geographic Magazine Turkey, 06/2018
The first passenger cable car system in the Soviet Union has been built in Chiatura. Construction of the cable car was ordered by the Soviet leader of the period – Josef Stalin, who was also a native of Georgia - and was intended to help the miners more easily access and transport the manganese and iron mineral deposits in the hilly valley.
Today, the cable cars remain distinctive symbols of Chiatura. Like Time Machine from the past to the modern day, the cable cars are over half-a-centuryold and still transporting people to their homes and businesses.
The process of patience
‘I am not fully healed, I am not fully wise, I am still on my way. What matters is that I am moving forward.’ ~ Yung Pueblo
We are all on this journey to figure out life and find purpose. One thing I have found is, you can’t rush the process, the journey takes time. A seed planted today will not sprout a towering tree overnight. It sometimes feels and looks like nothing is happening but the seed to grow roots down into the ground before it can break though the surface of the soil. As we grow, don’t be disheartened, press on.
Last weekend I got together with @dexter_marcel and and @_arrjay0 to experiment with a few ideas inspired by the legendary @lexonart. It was very hot somewhere in Abuja but we created some interesting images. .
These sweethearts were so nervous about being photographed, but they soon relaxed and we captured some wonderful memories together.
An engagement shoot is perfect for getting out those pre-wedding nerves about being photographed, sessions are super relaxed just strolling, chatting and having a giggle. In just a short 30 minute session, you'll feel so much more comfortable about being photographed on the day.
