To experience the Garzweiler surface mine first hand the Zaaf took a trip to one of the viewpoints. Unfortunately a lot of people had the same idea so the Zaaf couldn‘t enter the sky walk without keeping the recommended minimum distance. But of course the Zaaf brought its super precise binoculars.
In the moment the mine has the size of 48 km² and is used for mining lignite. There are and were many protests because of the villages that are forced to make way for the mining over the years and about global warming at all.
The Zaaf has a reputation for being a supporter of renewable energies. It especially likes the wind turbines which remind the Zaaf of the beautiful old windmills Don Quixote fought so heroically in the old days. 🐑
Most of the locations are already gone. Because until today, people in this area are being displaced, villages wiped out, history erased and the environment destroyed, all by Europe’s biggest open-pit coal mine.
All for cheap, dirty electricity. And it continues to do so, for the next eighteen years.
Time for change. Go green.
At some point it’s really time consuming and exhausting to gather all the information and shorten it to an easy to consume text. When nobody is reading (or needing) it, I would rather spend that time in another way.
But even if there is just a handful people who are enjoying my captions I would love to continue it. Please let me know!
