We boarded a passenger ferry on the Mekong River to get to Pha Ted Ke, the botanical gardens on the other side of Luang Prabang, Laos. As the boat sputtered to a stop on the riverfront with no obvious path to the park in sight, the captain signaled to his knees and pointed to the water, repeating the motion over and over. Our eyes went wide with fear, thinking he meant we had take off our sandals, hop out into the mud, and crawl up the hillside. There are moments when you travel where you say, "no, no, this is it, I'm good, and I don't need to do this," and other times when you throw caution to the wind and say, "why the hell not?" Not really sure where we landed in this instance...as it turns out, our trusty captain merely wanted to let us know that the river was low so we would be hopping into one of these tiny fishing boats to get to our final destination — no need to get our feet wet at all. 😬
Wishing all friends a Happy Loy Krathong Festival! The enchanting holiday pays respect to the River Goddess with the floating of ‘krathong’ offerings down the river. Head to the Mekong River and Nam Khan River to witness a spectacular scene this evening. #LoyKrathong
Although we were sick for most of our time in this capital city, we made the most of the couple hours we felt well enough to explore! 👏🏼⠀
Patuxai, or Victory Gate, in Vientiane is a war monument built to commemorate their defeat of France, giving Laos their independence! 🇱🇦 Ironically, it also resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris 🙃 ⠀
Tips for visiting:⠀
- everything in Vientiane was pretty empty even mid-day, so you don’t need to worry about crowds! 🙌🏼⠀
- it’s free to visit 🎟⠀
- from the backside you can look through the gate and see the president’s house at the boulevard 😍 ⠀
Do you like learning history while exploring, reading or in a museum? 🤔⠀

💥 Kawa Ijen 💥
One fact about me, I love hiking, trekking, adventures and all that sort of things. One thing I've done the most in Indonesia in a 6 weeks time there was to climb 5 different volcanoes. This is one of them called Kawa Ijen. You start at night to catch the famous blue fire inside the crater then you can witness that kind of view pretty much alone whilst the sun is rising. Seriously what else?
