What do we owe to each other?
Individualism has and continues to erode our communal and civic duties. As @mspackyetti explained in her last post, individualism plagues not only minds but also its consequences (e.g. not wearing a mask) threaten public safety. In centering American values on individual liberty, work ethic, and personal responsibility, we neglect our commitment to the “social contract.” Individualism undermines our responsibility to society and to others. And so, individualism also prevents us from realizing that the burden falls on all of us to rectify historical inequities.
Edit: To clarify, without policy interventions, it would take over 200 years for Black Americans to amass the wealth that white Americans have today! Apologies for the lack of specificity. I appreciate the person who commented with the correction. Here is the actual source: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/race/reports/2018/02/21/447051/systematic-inequality/
