Whenever I recommend hormone therapy to help people feel like themselves again, I often get asked, “Will my body become hooked on the treatment, and not be able to work well on its own again?
I have a few answers to this question that I thought I would share with you.
Hormones are a shortcut.
First of all, I like to think of hormone therapy as a shortcut to feeling better, usually pretty quickly. There are lots of ways to stay in hormonal balance, including eating well sleeping enough and exercising regularly and appropriately for your body.
However, one thing I often say is that “As the building gets older, it needs more maintenance.”
The second general comment I have is that not all hormone-producing organs are created equal. For example, the thyroid gland often has a declining function as we get older. This affects everything from mood to skin to the gut to metabolism. It may be true that supplementing with thyroid hormone can feedback on the brain and lower the signal to the thyroid to make its hormones.
However, when thyroid medicine is stopped, your body goes back to whatever it would have been producing without taking the medicine. In other words, supplementing with thyroid hormone does not lower your body’s ability to make the thyroid hormone. If you need and don’t take this kind of hormone supplementation, you are simply not giving your cells what they need.
The adrenal glands are another tricky subject (on which many entire books have been written). It might seem paradoxical, but when you use adrenal hormone supplementation it can actually take the load off of your adrenals and allow them to heal from the great deal of stress that we put on them nowadays.
Whether we choose to replace hormones up to the level of someone in their 20’s or just back to the levels that make us feel good, hormones can be a great way to feel our best for as long as possible.
It was rude and even mean. As I scrolled through Instagram, I saw a post by a fellow author that I admire. In his video he talked about how the media lies and skews the truth to fit bias of the channel. I continued to listen.
But then …
He turned mean and judgmental. This New York Times bestselling and famous author was talking about a current event happening right now when he said, those people are stupid and what the hell do they know? He was bashing a huge segment of our population.
I understand he is passionate about his views and beliefs, but I was disappointed that he turned so venomous.
Who is he? … It doesn’t matter.
I share this with you because right now, smart and reasonable people are doing and saying things out of character.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME 🎈
I’m determined to crush the 2020 STINK with gusto and force positivity out of an incredibly discouraging year.
Why not? It’s the last year in my 50’s. So, on my 59th birthday, these are a few of my wishes as I find the strength to blow out a few fiery candles:
A NEW BOOK RELEASE 📚
My YOUTUBE CHANNEL with inspiring videos on HOPE 🎙
COURAGE to ignore voices of doubt and BELIEF in a journey I feel called to do 🙌
And finally ... SELF COMPASSION to make time for A NAP 😴
In the Bible, 2nd Corinthians 12.v9. Christ told Paul, that HIS grace (HIS favor and loving-kindness and mercy) is enough for him.
Yes...God's grace is ENOUGH, therefore, we should be enough for ourselves too. We should be extending kindness, love and mercy, not only to others, but to ourselves as well. (Not from tangibles things, but deep within our spirit.)
When we miss the mark, make mistakes, and not hitting our goals; we spend too much time beating on ourselves, leaving us broken and adding on more limiting beliefs and lies along the way...Yup I'm in that class too. 😔
Today, I am encourging you to BE KIND TO YOURSELF, extending GRACE, LOVE and MERCY. #selflove#selfcare
Let's not dig any more self pity holes, instead let's CLIMB MOUNTAINS!
If the Master and Creator of the universe is extending HIS grace to you, do the same for yourself and be sure to pass it along.❤
💯 transparency as I wrote this out I thought to myself this is exactly what I need to hear today. So this reminder is just as much for me as it is for you!
We are our only limit and sometimes we have to get out of our heads and be able to see it before we realize we are holding ourselves back.
This is why support is so important and I am blessed to be surrounded by an amazing support system that can call me out on my BS when I start getting in my own way.
Tag the one friend that can get you out of your own head. (Mine is in the comments.)

My kitty loves to get on the very top of her cat tree so she can see outside better. She rises above all obstacles to get on the top and have a better view of her surroundings. We see something similar with Zacchaeus in the Bible. He needed to climb the sycamore tree and rise above the crowd to see Jesus. Do you need to climb a tree and get above everything going on in our world around us to see Jesus better? Maybe your tree looks like turning off your phone to have quiet time with the Lord. Maybe it looks like spending that extra time in the morning filling up on God’s word. Maybe that tree is Sharing with a friend what Jesus has done in your life recently. Whatever your tree looks like, climb up it and get a better view of Jesus. #Womanoffaith#Womanofgod#inspirationalwriter#inspirationalspeaker#timewithjesus#seegod#climbatree

What dominates your thoughts & daily habits is gonna dominate your life.
I’ve had seasons where I didn’t fight back. 🙇🏼♂️
I gave into hopelessness. I allowed my brain to cycle daily through my most traumatic events. I didn’t do anything to get help. 😖
I know how impossible depression can feel. At my worst, I basically slept for 6 months straight. 🛌
Depression is not a choice; fighting back is. 🥊
I know you’re already making excuses in your brain. 🧠
You’re already typing negative words in the comments. 📱
You’re saying nobody cares enough to help. 😭
But sometimes you have to be your own hero. 🦸🏼♂️
Sometimes you have believe against all odds that things can get better. 🌱
Sometimes you have to say, “I will not spend the next 30 years hating myself.” 🗣
I fight back by focusing on sleep, eating well, drinking water, counseling, setting new goals, exercise and weight-lifting, letting a select few people into what’s happening, writing, medication, self-care, cutting myself some slack, getting one thing done everyday, helping others in-person and on social media, combatting negative self-talk. ✨
-I know it all can feel so overwhelming.
-I know you’ve been trying harder than anyone will ever see.
-I know you are strong enough to never give up.
And I’ll be here cheering you on the whole way. 📣
In this together. Love, Sam.

Bodhi isn't the only one who's ALL smiles in the am! ☀️ Over the past year, I've moved towards slower mornings + this has brought me so much JOY.
I spend at least an hour and a half journaling, reading + meditating before I take my phone off airplane mode. I sip my coffee like it's the last coconut milk latte I'll have on Earth. And I don't take my first client or meeting till 10 or 11 am.
As a Soulpreneur, it's essential for me to diligently manage my energy so I can hold sacred, healing space for others. How we enter into the day is a CHOICE that dictates how we feel throughout the day. My morning rituals are non-negotiabes for me ~ an essential part of my mental, emotional + spiritual health.
Check out my full morning rituals routine via the link in bio + share YOUR fav morning rituals with me via your IG stories!
Local ATL biz shoutout to @dogdaysatlanta for taking such loving care of my fur baby throughout the day while mama lives out her dharma. I think you should be called #dharmadogdays . 😜🐾

Maybe you’re sick of me talking about suicide; I am too sometimes. 🙄
Spending the last 6 months heavily immersed in the final edits and rewrites of my book, the past is so fresh in my mind. 🧠
There have many several days in my life I almost didn’t make it to another birthday. 😣
I can’t explain what it’s like to have a brain that low-key tries to self-destruct. 🧠
I’ve had some hard birthdays. I’ve had some lonely birthdays. I’ve had some forgotten birthdays. 🎂
But at the end of the day, suicide still hasn’t won. 💪🏻
And that seems like something worth celebrating. 🎉
See you soon. Love, Sam.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are an estimated 17.1 million cases of depression in the U.S. each year. 😔
I know every news show is talking about the ‘Rona nonstop. When’s the last time you heard a single news segment about mental health? 📰
“Well Corona can be fatal.” Yes, yes it can. Depression can be too. 💯
When I was suicidal, I believed I was the only one struggling. Turns out I was WAY wrong. 👥
Depression is a common and treatable medical illness. 🏥
👩🏾⚕️ Talk to your doctor.
🗣 Chat with a counselor.
🏋🏼♂️ Get regular exercise.
🍏 Eat real foods.
💤 Sleep 7-9 hours per night.
🤬 Set boundaries around toxic people.
🌱 Find your purpose.
I’ve been fighting this battle with you for 15 years. 👊🏻
We’re gonna get through COVID. We’re gonna get through depression too. Keep fighting my friend. 🥊
