Sri Lanka’s Elephant Transit Home has got to be one of the most wonderful places I have ever visited.
Located about 5km away from the Udawalawe Nation Park and supported by the Born Free Foundation, this home is a halfway house for orphaned elephants. After rehabilitation, the elephants are released back into the wild, many into the park.
Although you can’t get up close and personal with the elephants, seeing them at feeding time is still a lot of fun and just a beautiful sight.
While I was there the elephants were released in small batches, first of all they were fed a starter of milk and afterwards it was on to the main course of leaves.
There was one particular small baby elephant 🐘 who won the hearts of everyone watching. He was so excited that when released he ran as fast as his little legs would take him, skipping the queue and creating as much noise possible - it was so amazing to see.
If you ever visit Sri Lanka, make sure you visit this place - it really is wonderful.
WEWRUKANNALA RAJAMAHA VIHARAYA
It is one of the most amazing Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The Wewurukannala Vihara temple is dominated by an image of a seated Buddha. It is 160ft high, the largest statue in all of Sri Lanka and dates back to the time of King Rajadhi.
