What is arabesque? The sinuous, curving ornamental motif has ancient sources and first appeared in Islamic cultures as a form of sacred writing. In our upcoming exhibition, trace the history of this whimsical motif, from the German Romantics to Art Nouveau. Arabesque opens December 14 at the Clark!

This week we share a special Humans of Kripalu — #WomensWeekatKripalu edition. Enjoy a few behind-the-scenes moments from a guest from New York City:⠀
⠀ #WomensWeekatKripalu was more than I expected. I practiced with the iconoclastic yogi #AngelaFarmer , I heard inspirational and mind opening keynote speeches, and I got to processes it all with the amazing women who came together for this event. I listened to my gut and planned this trip last minute and it was just what I needed at this time.⠀
Want to share your story of inspiration and transformation at #Kripalu ? Hashtag us #Kripalu and use Humans of Kripalu in the caption. Follow the link in our bio to find out what's coming up, only at Kripalu.⠀

So far in 2019, 331 transgender and gender-diverse people have been killed worldwide, according to Forbes. 30 of those murdered were in the United States, and these numbers only reflect individuals where the murder was identified as a hate crime against transgender and gender diverse people. Today, November 20th, is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today is #womensentrepreneurshipday and I wanted to take a minute to honor what that really means to me.
It’s not just a title, it’s really a part of who I am as a person and one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. There is no “right way” to be an entrepreneur and to be one means you have to be willing to pave your own way at times and not just think outside the box, but live outside of it at times. That’s tough, especially when you come from a world full of people stuck in a cycle, repeating the same process they hate each day with no idea how to stop.
But probably the most important thing I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is how to be confident and keep going no matter what trips you up or who tells you that you can’t do something.
Because guess what, you absolutely CAN do it. What did you always dream of doing when you were a kid? That is your inter entrepreneur. That curiosity and desire to do it better or your way. And the people telling you that you can’t or ignoring your social media posts for your business or accomplishments, those people are just feeling jealous. Period.
For some reason some people seem to think another’s success means somehow they can’t succeed too. Those are not your people and they will always be there. Just lift them up too and move on with your goals.
The fact that I’m doing all of this as a woman in a world that could use some more female leaders makes me proud. So proud to be a small part of such an important movement. Thank you universe for the gift of each day, this journey I am on, and the ability to share it with people who find it helpful ❤️🙏🙌

A diagnosis of cancer is tough enough. Learning that she had to leave her community for medical care became the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. And so, Denise Dufault insisted on cancer surgery at Fairview Hospital – even though the procedure had never been done there before. “I was not going anywhere else but Fairview,” she said.⠀
Denise's experience began five years ago, when she was diagnosed with cancer and told she would be referred to a larger hospital. “I refused for good reasons,” she said. “Dr. Veinoglou was my surgeon and I didn’t want anyone else. I had confidence in him and Fairview. And I needed to have the support of my family, friends and my community. I was only going to get that right here at Fairview.”⠀
According to Denise, George Veinoglue, MD, advocated on her behalf to hospital administration, which approved the surgery. She also convinced a plastic surgeon to attend the procedure, so that he could begin the reconstruction process. During that same year, Denise learned she next required a hysterectomy. “Again, I said I would only do it at Fairview,” she said.⠀
“All I can say is, I was treated like a queen for both hospital stays,” Denise continued. “This is my community and they knew me. I received excellent, personalized care.”⠀
To this day, Denise wears a necklace she received as a gift during her first surgery. The words “Fairview Hospital” are inscribed on one side. “The little hospital that could,” is inscribed on the other side. “It reminds me every day of the wonderful care I received there,” she said.⠀

John Singer Sargent may have painted this study during one of his frequent visits to the Mediterranean. When working outside, Sargent often chose to paint contained views like this rather than panoramic vistas, focusing on subtle differences of light and texture.
