My full name is Zamalawu Mthembu. I have been married to Musawenkosi Shandu for five years and we have one amazing four year old son, Sbanisenkosi Shandu, meaning 'God’s light'. He is a bundle of joy and brings us untold happiness and love. We have a two bedroom house in the city of Pietermaritzburg and always have family around to visit or stay.
I don’t remember a week where it was just the three of us, but we love it that way since it means we are in a position to help family members in need. I have adopted a sister, a next-door neighbour, who had a child very young and couldn’t provide for him, so her and her son are part of our family now.
I studied Law LLB at UKZN, which is where I met my husband who was studying Macrobiology and Plant Pathology. I work as a senior examiner and can’t say I love my job, but the bills are paid. My husband can’t get a permanent job in his field and has been working as a part-time teacher. He hates his job.
We love spending time with our son and showing him new things. He loves games (cars especially) and animals, so when we get extra cash we spend it on him where possible. My favourite photo is when my son (under his dad’s influence who thought it would be funny) took photos of us after I had told him not to since I was in my dressing gown!
