“Late in the evening we heard the anchor chain being pulled up so we knew we were on our way. Many of us noticed a lot of ships being left at anchor and wondered about the plan. We weren't on our own but it was clear we were heading off as the first wave. I spoke to one of the ships crew on deck and asked him why we were in front of the rest. His less than encouraging answer was: ‘Don't you know you lot aren't expected to survive so the others are following as back-up. From what I’ve heard you'll be lucky if a quarter of you get through’.”
