It’s now been more than 100 days since the Hong Kong protests began. When you cover the protests day in and day out, the preposterous becomes normal.
Riot police leaping from bushes on the highway to the airport becomes normal. Police brutality becomes normal. The smell of tear gas on your clothes becomes normal. Molotov cocktails in the city's busiest neighbourhoods. Threats against yourself and your family. Creeping authoritarianism.
I’ve been taking a break away from home, and while the rest was much needed, it’s jarring to be reminded that life goes on in the outside world, that the protests are just another headline – if that. And Hong Kong is already lucky enough to be a city that the rest of the world actually knows and cares about, for various reasons.
But how do you keep the spotlight on the same issue for so long? I’ll be back next week, hoping to tackle the story with fresh eyes.
