What I loved about teaching was that I was able to directly have an influence on my students lives. To give them what they need, want and at times things they didn’t even know they wanted at the moment.
I miss having that opportunity.
_ @anniemaithai reached out to me recently to have an accent wall done in her home. During that first in-home consultation, she explained to me that this project meant more to her than just an accent wall. She is expecting what will be her final child into her family and that this wall is part of her DREAM nursery. She was not able to build her dream nursery for her previous pregnancy, so she wanted to do it right this last and final time.
I’m glad she told me that story because it made me a lot more emotionally invested in the project. We made sure we found some baby friendly paint (low VOC) from @sherwinwilliams and I made a concerted effort to be as unobtrusive in her already busy household. This was not just an accent wall I was building, I was helping to build a DREAM.
The accent wall turned out amazing! And Annie was speechless when it was revealed to her for the first time. 😊
Wood working may not be a vocation that readily inspires or changes people’s lives on the daily in comparison to teaching. But sometimes I can get lucky and use my skills to make somebody else’s dreams come true.
And that’s pretty cool.

🕌Vischering Castle🕌 (German: Burg Vischering) in Lüdinghausen, North Rhine-Westphalia is the most typical moated castle in the Münster region of Germany. This region has one of the highest German concentrations of castles, palaces and fortifications, Lüdinghausen having three by itself. The castle consists of outer defensive courtyard, defensive gateways, moat, drawbridge, main building and chapel. The sandstone walls, the red tile roofs as well as their reflection in the moat provide many harmonious views from the wooded surroundings.
Vischering Castle was built by Bischop Gerhard von der Mark to counter the second castle built by the Von Lüdinghausen family. It became the seat of the Droste zu Vischering Family. Droste is the local title for the hereditary noble administrators serving the Bishops of Münster. The moat is constantly replenished by a side-arm of the River Stever. The outer defensive courtyard contains the business and farm buildings. The main building is a horseshoe-shaped three-story structure with heavy outer wall. Its inner courtyard is closed off by the chapel and a lower defense wall. A castle keep is missing, having been removed during Renaissance renovations. Fire destroyed the castle in 1521. Rebuilding took place on the existing foundation. Windows and the addition of a large bay made the castle more liveable but diminished its defensive character. The whole site however retains the character of a feudal age moated castle. Damage from air attack during World War II was minor.
Vischering Castle houses the Münsterlandmuseum, an exhibit on knighthood for children, as well as a cafe-restaurant. It serves as a cultural center for Kreis Coesfeld. Visiting hours are provided in the first link below. Viewing the outside is possible at all times. The second link provides a more detailed chronology of the castle in German .🕌 @best.castles
Domaine de Chantilly. You could call it a smaller, quieter version of the Palace of Versailles.
There's an on-site mansion, sprawling André Le Nôtre-designed gardens, Michelin-starred gastronomy and a five-star hotel.
But, crucially, no sea of tourists.
In recent years, city-weary Parisians in the know -- and in the money -- have been escaping to the Domaine de Chantilly, a retreat just 40 minutes away by train or car from the daily grind, chaos and noise of urban living in the French capital.
Surrounded by dense, green forests, it's home to one of France's lesser known châteaux, long eclipsed by its more ostentatious cousins in the Loire Valley and Versailles.
Auberge du Jeu de Paume allows guests to live like French aristocracy.

At its heart is Auberge du Jeu de Paume, a five-star hotel built specifically with Parisians in mind.
The allure? A restorative retreat where stressed-out urbanites can live like 19th-century French nobility in the bucolic countryside -- think horseback riding, polo, long forest promenades and Swiss spa treatments -- if only for a weekend. "When we first opened in 2012, our target market was the Parisian market," says Pascal Groell, the hotel's director, or "maître de maison." "Paris is close by and easy to develop. But we very quickly discovered that the city of Chantilly was not well-known in the market or outside of France, even though this is a real gem. There are a lot of things to discover here." Chantilly is best known within the upper echelons of Paris society for hosting some of the most prestigious horse races in Europe, including the Prix de Diane Longines and the Prix du Jockey Club, also known as the French Derby.
The château's last owner, Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, is credited with establishing the first racecourse in France, in the 19th century, after discovering the sport in England.
Chantilly is also known for hosting polo events and the luxury classic car show Chantilly Arts & Elegance. In other words, elite events traditionally reserved for society's upper crust. @kausastralys
