Six years ago today! On April 1st, 2014, word floated around my area that NS 17G would have a trio of ex-Conrail SD80MACs for power. I remember everyone (myself included) being heavily skeptical at first, given April Fools traditions. However, I went to check Morrisville Yard anyway to play it safe — and sure enough, it was true. I repositioned to Woodbourne, and stopped at the Styer’s Orhard to ask if I could go back and take a photo. The lady at the register said to go for it, so off I went. I got to this opening with moments to spare as the trio of beasts rolled westbound on the Morrisville Line with what would’ve been MOPI (Morrisville-Pittsburgh) back in their heyday. #trainiac
Amtrak #603 is a GE E60 locomotive built by General Electric for Amtrak on their Northeast Corridor in the late 1970s and early 80s. The E60s were infamous for their rough riding and inefficient service (like most of Amtrak’s early locomotives) the E60s served their last with Amtrak in 2003, and have since practically vanished.
