I wonder what he is thinking about.🐺
Probably he is dreaming of long walks on sandy beaches or in enchanted forests.
We haven’t been able to bring him on long mountain hikes with us because it’s not good for such big dogs to overwork their joints. The breeder we got Balthazar from told us that he was allowed to take max 12 stairs per day. I am not sure if that statement is completely true, but we’ve been trying to take him on some hikes that we knew weren’t that hard once in a while and most of the time it was a struggle or a big mistake.
Balthazar doesn’t like rough mountainous hikes, he gets very insecure and doesn’t know where to put his long paws. You have to tap lightly on his paws every single step he takes to show which paw he has to use and where, and it’s not like you can carry him over the rocky parts. He also gets tired pretty fast but that is not a problem. We could take more breaks and wait for him. The main problem is that he is not allowed to overwork his joints too much.
Last time we tried to take him with us on one easy (like we thought) hike, I (Katja) had to turn back because Balthazar started to stop every few meters and didn’t want to continue walking any further. Björn and Oliver continued the hike and Balthazar and me went back to the bus. Of course, if he feels that he is done for the day we will never make him to overwork himself and turn back every time.
It pains me to have to leave him when we take a bit harder mountainous hikes but at the same time I know that it’s not healthy for him and it may decrease or affect his life when he gets older. I also know that all the hikes we’ve taken during the past few months here he wouldn’t be able to finish. Some parts are just too steep.
Luckily it’s not that warm outside anymore, so we can leave him in the bus without being concerned for his well being.
Balthazar is not a mountain dog, but soon we will leave this place and there will be plenty of hikes and walks in forests, valleys and easier terrains that we can share with him.
Every time we come back from a hike we take him for a long walk on a beach. Luckily there are plenty of beautiful beaches here in Lofoten.
Hamnøy is an iconic and the oldest fishing village in Lofoten. Oldest fisherman cabin there is from the 1890's. This village is also getting really iconic on Instagram as it's probably the most Instagrammed spot in Lofoten. But I can't deny it's beauty.
Everyone knows about Iceland and well, its wonders are quite famous across the globe. Iceland is one of the best countries to travel to in Europe. It has many places to wander and wonder about the natural beauties.
