Nothing to See at @art.room.1000fryd //
At the exhibition Nothing To See, composer and sound artist Morten Poulsen stage the act of listening in a play between foreground and background. Utilizing sound material that exist on the edge of human hearing perception, the installation amplify the local sounding environment and points to the listeners own self-reflexive role therein.
In connection with an artistic residency at Bergen Center for Electronic Arts / BEK in April 2019, Morten experimented with aural conditions that position the listener in the immediate sonic environment, creating situations where composed, accidental and imagined sounds blend together.
Domestica // sound object by Morten Poulsen ——————— The term soundscape describes the sounding environment as perceived by humans. A soundscape is a combination of sounds that arises from our immediate environment, while at the same time forming the acoustic surroundings that we live in, having a conscious and subconscious effect on us as individuals and social beings. For this sound sculpture, we turn our ear towards domestic soundscapes; the seemingly mundane soundscapes that form our everyday environment. A domestic soundscape contains a multitude of individual sounds; the knives on the cutting board preparing dinner, the humming of the refrigerator, the squeaky door, the sounds of cutlery when dining, the sound of wind shaking the windows, a radiator heating up for the winter or, as with this sound sculpture, organizing cups in the cupboard.
The chaotic sounds of porcelain cups creates complex melodies that rings with both restlessness and humor. The sounds are presented in an old vitrine, which is normally a cabinet for displaying the finest porcelain and glass. Attached inside this vitrine are six sound exciters that turn the sounds into physical vibration that, just like the body of an acoustic musical instrument, filter the sound through the construction of the vitrine itself, revealing its acoustic properties and makes it a small concert hall for small sounds.
By turning our attention towards our immediate surroundings and by listening with care to sounds that we share, it is possible to find similarities and connections between apparently different ways of living. This piece seeks to highlight domestic sounds and, by importing them from private to public space, create contemplation and discussion about the things we have in common.
Domestica is commissioned by Kunsten Museum of Modern Art for Kulturkaravane Nord / Culture Caravane North. From October 22nd to November 9th 2019, Kulturkaravane Nord presents Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and The Danish Royal Theatre in 11 towns in the region of Northern Jutland in Denmark. @kunstendk #soundart#lydkunst#danishsoundart#vitrine#domestica

On September 21st 2019, Øystein Wyller Odden’s composition ‘Power Balance’ had its world premiere in Oslo City Hall as part of Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festiva. ‘Power Balance’ is a musical representation of changes in the power grid.
The work consists of a self-resonating piano that is fitted with vibrating devices connected directly to the national power grid. It has been tuned to vibrate according to the frequencies emitted by AC current, and is accompanied by a string octet which reacts to the fluctuations of the current in real-time, based on a score developed in collaboration with Jan Martin Smørdal. The piece alludes to both electricity’s utilitarian and magical qualities, and to its constant, underlying presence in everyday life.
Wyller Odden also created an installation for osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024, called 'Power Line Hum', which played in the Oslo City Hall every day between 3:45-4pm between May 25th until September 21st 2019. The concert marked the last day the installation was played as part of the inaugural osloBIENNALEN programme.

Thanks to everyone who came to the first Art Club for kids for the spring semester yesterday. Our Art Club kids had a great time making sound art with artist John Derek Bishop and our educator Margrethe Aanestad.
