This random photo taken in a famous Park Street restaurant, in Calcutta, brings back lots of memories for me. This photo was taken exactly 9 years ago and many things have changed, in my life, ever since. But no matter what, Park Street had remained a witness of such great many altering phases of my adulthood.
Park Street always had been a special place, for me, serving the taste of Colonial Calcutta as it stood strong as the only bridge connecting the Grey Town of the past with the glitters of the present. Be it the Mediterranean kebabs of Peter Cat or the deviled crab of Mocambo, be it the musical nights of Trincas, or the roasted duck of Moulin Rouge, be it crispy red chicken fries of Bar-b-que or the mighty breakfast served at Flury's, Park Street has created many permanent photographs in the album of my memory.
Then it was the people, of course. The friendly old waiters working there for 50 odd years and some oriental waiters who can speak Bangla as good my mother. I had spent so many fabulous evenings with a few special friends, withstanding the chilly winter winds coming through the door. The late night Uber and the fading lights of the Christmas decorations will always remain as a part of my life.

Dorothy Dandridge with her musical arranger and pianist Phil Moore, photographed outside of the Mocambo nightclub, 1951. She opened at the club on May 7th that year, giving the club its biggest opening in history. Her engagement at the club lasted 2 weeks.
Phil and Dorothy were romantically involved for a period of time, and even shared a home together on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.

‘Almost Famous’ Crispy fried (not so oily) prawns 😍 Mocambo offers a full and varied menu, including alcohol so you'll find something for everyone. The sea food variety is crazy so if you're a fan of sea food, be sure to try the Deviled Crab, Fish Florentine, Beckty Bell Meuniere and these fried prawn as well. More suggestions are welcomed 😉

This is the holy grail of vintage Los Angeles menus! Just purchased these precious relics on eBay. The lot included menu’s from CIRO’s, the MOCAMBO, CHASEN’S, The BROWN DERBY, and LAWRY’S - all from 1941. AND LOOK AT THE PRICES! “Spaghetti Derby” for 65 cents, “Sliced Breast of Turkey Mocambo” for a buck 25, and Martini’s for $0.35.There is also a postcard and a coaster from the ZEBRA ROOM and a postcard from the TOWN HOUSE Hotel once located on Wilshire and owned by Conrad Hilton. There was also a name tag with the name Charles Voorhees. I BET he was staying at the Town House and collected all of these as souvenirs during his stay in Los Angeles because there is also a map included in the pile! He probably picked that up at the front desk. And note there’s no freeways on that map!
