Born on this day, Gustav Klimt, who died nearly a century ago from complications related to the Spanish Influenza (1918).
🎞Klimt was born in 1862 in Baumgarten, Austria. By age 14, he had enrolled in Vienna’s School of Applied Arts where he studied a range of subjects, including fresco painting and mosaic.
🎞 He was a devoted student and spent hours in Vienna’s museums poring over antique vases and other treasures.
🎞 By 1897, Klimt and some of his friends broke from the Vienna Artists’ Association to form a radical group called the Secession (named after an ancient Roman term meaning “revolt against ruling powers”). Klimt became the group’s president and its guiding spirit.
🎞 Klimt’s inspiration became the psychological inquiry and preoccupation with sexuality that pervaded the Viennese avant-garde.
🎞 By the early 1900s, his depictions of women became increasingly expressive of their personalities and desires—and of human emotion in general.
🎞 His portraits of society women were rife with expressive features and gowns that looked as if they’d been woven from flowers newly bursting into bloom.
🎞 Not long after, Klimt took a trip to Ravenna, Italy, where he saw Byzantine art. It stuck with him, and his famed Gold Period ensued.
🎞 As Klimt edged closer to his untimely death at age 55 (the result of complications from a stroke), references to the life cycle also appear more frequently in his paintings.
🎞Klimt’s work boldly broke from artistic convention, paved the way for the Vienna Secession and went on to influence Viennese Expressionism, a movement spearheaded by his pupil, Schiele.
🎞 Klimt’s mural work pioneered the union of art and architecture that would later influence the Bauhaus and the Russian Constructivists.

Title: Allah o Akbar
This is a diptych painting, which compares man's life with a chicken. Murders have become so common these days that we get rarely effected by that. Slaughtering a man for one's own will is like slaughtering a chicken to satisfy your hunger.

When my son was 3 years old, him and I used to do a lot of abstract painting together. He actually took his art very seriously and even added little highlights to balance out his work. Now he's 6 and draws dinosaurs. I'm still stuck in my abstract phase. At least one of us advanced. 👨🎨🦖🦕
This painting was one of my first abstract messes. 😁
